I've known about this for a while now, but now that it's announced, what're your thoughts? :)

QuoteMicrosoft said Tuesday it will offer shoppers who buy Windows XP-based PCs between Oct. 26 and March 15 coupons for discounted or free upgrades to Vista, which is scheduled for delivery to stores and on new PCs in January.
SWEET!

So, I spose, with my new laptop I can do that.

So.. us faithful people who have XP since before SP1 get the shaft, huh?  Good thing I don't care, or I might be upset!  :P

I wonder if this applies to academic MSDN accounts? :'(

I sort of suspect Vista will be on there in a short amount of time after the release, though -- that's what the optimistic side of my personality tells me, anyway.

I'm more concerned with how long it will take before they offer academic discounts on Vista because thats probably the only way I could justify buying anytime soon

Academic MSDN acounts are (basically) student discounts.  Computer Science majors here are automatically signed up for academic MSDN accounts.  (I assume) they're super-nerfed compared to a MSDN account you pay $2,000/year for, but I still got two free copies of XP out of it.

I would assume your university has something similar.

I have no idea how long it takes Microsoft to decide to release something like a discounted version of Vista into the gruby hands of college students, but I would assume it's within a (somewhat) reasonable timeframe.

Other companies are giving deals on Vista, too.

As far as I know (I just skimmed the article) it only counts if you order a new computer with XP.
