THE NEXT VERSION OF UBUNTU IS GOING TO BE RELEASED IN A COUPLE OF HOURS!
<--- HAPPY
I'm constantly pressing refresh on the Ubuntu homepage. lol.
This is the kind of thing that keeps me going throughout the week. LOL. ;D
By the way, if any, who uses Ubuntu here?
:)
Only the losers.
I use Ubuntu but I'm not looking forward to Edgy. I'm currently running the AMD64-Server but I want to use it for other stuff than just LAMP (reason why it was installed in the first place). I'm downloading the 6.06 Desktop(64bit) right now. We'll see how that works out.
YAY! It's out! :)
Downloading right now. :)

I don't need to say anything, by you saying that stupid comment, you do it for me.
Thanks for saving me the time!
I used ubuntu until dapper came out and they ruined the easy-to-use interface in gnome. Of course, that's totally my bias against "change is good", but I'd rather use Slackware over Ubuntu now, just because of that.
See? Even Joe isn't a loserly Ubuntu user (though he's a loserly Jesus Freak, so it balances out)!

It's all preference. Ubuntu, being simplistic and very easy to use, it is my preferred distro.
You don't see me calling you stupid for using a more complicated distro when you can use an easy-to-use one, do you?
You're right, it is based on preferance.
Us Slackware people are still more badass than you, though! (Joking. :P)

Thank you:)
I had the best experience with Ubuntu. Everything component of my laptop worked... out of the box. Other distros I had to mess with crap to get it to work. Also, with Ubuntu, the community is awesome, any question I had was answered. On top of that, tUbuntu has a HUGE repository. It had every program I ever needed.
Yes, that's a great advantage of some other distributions. Things that work out of the box usually come with disadvantages as well, as I'm sure you've realized. "Messing" with crap is fun! Plus, that's how some people want their operating system to be. They want to build it from the ground up, so to speak.
I'm not trying to convince you to use Slackware (because I realize that it's not for everyone), but I do want to point out some of the advantages that you've probably already recognized.

Yup, of course. Being that I am not that familiar with Linux, I can't "mess" with it. I'm sure if I had the knowledge to "mess" with it so I could customize it to my exact liking, I would and when that time comes, I would probably switch distros.
I'm using 6.06 at the moment, simply because I broke my slackware and I have yet to have the time to fix it. I've been writing too many papers for school as of late.
Use Red Hat for a year, be skilled in Red Hat.
Use Ubuntu for a year, be skilled in Ubuntu.
Use Slackware for a year, be skilled in Linux.
Hmmm...

Blah blah, you said that to me and I still don't care :P
And Edgy is lackluster.
Yeah, Newby, but Slackware isn't easy. Here's some paraphrase (I can't find the original) of a quote iago told me a while back.
QuoteSlackware Linux is for bearded old UNIX sysadmins who enjoy doing all their work through ten feet of snow, uphill both ways, and barefoot.

To be honest, I don't know a single soul outside this forum or the vL forum that uses slackware. :P
EDIT: I can't bare to withhold ... but I can't see any Linux distribution topping Gentoo for "manual" ... I mean, the older Gentoo releases didn't even have an installer. There is supposedly a gtk installer now, but I still use the old one when I need Linux. It's a lot like OpenBSD's install ... except worse.
There are two ways to install Gentoo, you can have it compile the compiler, then have the compiler compile the userland, then make.conf ... the kernel ... then portage ... then build cron and syslog ... it takes a few days.
Then there is a stage3 install.
You do the following
- Boot the CD
- Configure internet
- Fdisk, mount and swapon
- Lynx and download stage3
- Untar stage3
- Chroot and update environment
- make a make.conf
- Lynx and download portage
- untar portage
- use portage to get the kernel sources
- compile the kernel
- have portage build syslog, cron and boot loader.
Yes, it's pretty
nasty. OpenBSD has you do the first 3 steps and it does everything else for you through a curses interface.
Only reason I use Gentoo is that it's portage is very familiar to ports in Free/OpenBSD.
So, I would hope Slackware isn't
that bad.

I don't visit vL's forum! Now you do!
There's a kid in my CS class that uses it on his server. I was surprised, but hey!

I use to visit vL forum, until the sadistic Invert pissed me off.
Anyhow, read up ... you can see what "nude, in 10 feet of snow, -40C" really means :)

I can install Slackware 10 in under two hours on a 166MHz machine. It's a curses interface.
Also, as far as nobody else using Slackware, I know one real-life friend, but I don't know if that counts because I'm solely responsible for that.

It's okay ... not like many people use FreeBSD either :P
Actually, I know a lot of people who use *BSD at my school. They're gay.
