Title: New job?
Post by: iago on November 22, 2006, 07:58:40 PM
A branch of Symantec had a job posting up for a Jr Security Analyst position at a Calgary branch (which is about 20 hours west of where I live).  I figured it couldn't hurt to try, and polished up my resume, wrote a convincing cover-letter, and threw my hat in.

The job posting ends at the end of the month (Nov 30), so I figured I wouldn't hear anything until well after that.  I mailed in my application at 7:30 this morning, and heard back from them before noon.  I emailed back and forth with the guy a couple times, and it seems really neat.

Since as most of you know, I'm a Security Guy at heart, and I'm doing PHP development right now, it'll be nice to move on.  Of course, my current boss isn't thrilled at the idea, but he said he'll support me.

So yeah, I'm doing a telephone interview on Wednesday.  I'll post back and let y'all know how it goes!

Security.. Symantec?  Those two don't intermingle, silly!

In all seriousness, congrats.  If you get it, will you move out?

I think you could cross Canada (West to East) in 20 hours -- with highway's at least. And considering Manatoba is right in the middle, there's three options:

1. Symantec is in South America / Mexico / Texas.
2. I'm bad at estimating the time it takes to cross Canada.
3. iago used the wrong unit.

Although 2 is obvious, I'm leaning towards 3. :).

I think that he clearly stated it was in Calgary... how'd you even come up with 1?

I'm pretty sure #2 is the correct option (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=calgary+to+winnipeg&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=38.554089,96.328125&ie=UTF8&z=6&om=1).

Thank you.  Here's the estimate to completely cross Canada.  Kind of funny that the best route is through the US. :)

No, I'd be working on security reports and stuff, Symantec != Norton (Symantec owns Norton)

Hahahah, you go through REGINA.  There was a guy in my school that graduated a few years before me with the last name of Regina.  He'd get pissed when we called him "Rah - Jine - Ah" instead of "Rah - Gene - Ah."

The proper pronounciation of the city is the first one.  Unless we've all been pronouncing it wrong in Manitoba.

Incidentally, I provided the wrong link.  Here is a better one (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Victoria,+BC,+Canada+to+St+John%27s,+NF,+Canada&sll=49.95122,-90.703125&sspn=5.146975,13.776855&ie=UTF8&z=3&om=1).

<edit> yes, Regina is supposed to rhyme with Vagina.  Just to clear that up.

If you get the job be sure to post a free copy of Norton.
