Title: Joe the Lifeguard (AGAIN!)
Post by: Joe on January 22, 2007, 06:27:18 PM
If you don't know why I'm looking for another job, read my forum. I don't feel like recapping right now.

So, a friend of mine was the Head Guard (I guess one level below supervisor, or another title for it, but whatever, he was seniority) at Great Wolf Lodge, Wisc Dells, and upon hearing I was fired from the Wilderness he recommended I apply there, since they never hire foreigners in seasonal jobs (if they move to American, obviously they don't bar them from employment) and as such always need help, and I should get hired easily having lifeguarding experience and certification.

After my trip to Mall of America, I have about $5 to my name, so it finally hit me that I need a job before Feb 4th or I can't play WoW (I'm not as obsessed with WoW as that makes it sound, but I'm just saying that's how broke I am), remembered how much fun having a job and money was, and decided to go all out "need job or bust", so I put some real priority into getting a job.

I walked into human resources at Great Wolf, and here's a watered down fifteen minutes. (Note: April = HR secretary or whatever they are, but "April" is easier to type)

April: Hey, how can I help you?
Joe: Are you currently hiring lifeguards?
April: We sure are.
Joe: Can I get an application please?
* Starts filling it out, five minutes later:
Joe: Hey.. I used to work at the Wilderness but I don't know their address..
April: Ah, that's just fine. Out of curiosity, what did you do there?
Joe: I was a lifeguard, so I'm already certified and everything.
April: Oh, cool! I do the hiring for most of the lifeguards.. Would you like to set up an interview tomorrow?

So, from there we worked out a good time (4:45 PM) and I finished filling out my application (I'm not a felon, I'm not 18, I can get to work, sign, date), turned it in and that was it. Pray to thy gods and sacrafice whatever you want to cook for dinner tomorrow, or just wish me luck. :)

What are you going to say when she asks you why you don't work at the other place anymore?

I already explained. Wisconsin Dells is famous for firing Americans and she understood perfectly what happened, so I'm already clear.

People from Brazil, Peru, and Argentina. No Mexicans, they're housekeepers and resort attendants.

Everyone knows that anyone from Central or South America is automagically a Mexican, unless they are from an island, then they are Rastafarians and wouldn't steal your job unless you were a taxi driver or a weed tester.

The Wilderness hires Americans in seasonal jobs when they're short on foreigners for some reason or another, and then management issues the whole "fire them on any little fuck-up" and about 30 get fired in a month, because American lifeguards make $8.00 an hour and foreigners make like $5.00 + lodging or something. She understood that I was terminated because of that, so it's all good.

No, not really. I should -- they came to my country and took my job, but I'll get over it.

It's frustrating, yes, but it's part of life.  You'd be a better person for not hating them because of it.

Anything south of the border is a foreign Spanish-speaking country to me, but not necessarily Mexico.

I'm Red Cross, and I'm going to cert with Ellis at this place, but they did accept my Red Cross cert.

Today was easy.. we filled out a bunch of forms (notably the W-4) and talked about HIV/Hepatitis B, and from there we covered traditions of the company. After that, we were asked if we wanted to work tonight, so my hour Nazi mentality (and lack of anything better to do) caused me to head to the waterpark.

From there, nothing eventful happened. I just shadowed another guard.. nobody drowned or anything exciting that you (or I) could possibly care about.

Did you have to do a CPR test? And if you did what Time did you do. 2-15 or 2-30 Pushes on the chest.

Having an eventless day either a. makes your job easier (ie: event as some hooplah with bad food and some sort of mascot) or b. shows you did your job right (ie: event as someone drowning).

Well, today we ran out of food in the break room so our manager sent us to the snack area, who were directed to give the guards free food. And right about that time Wiley the Wolf walked by and said hi, so I did have some hooplah about food and some sort of mascot.

I just spent the day shadowing some hot girl named Amanda. I was on noncert rotation (slide towers, mostly) so on Thursday I'll probably either shadow the cert rotation or solo the tower rotation.

I've actually made the decision that when I'm offered either tower rotation or guard rotation, I'll pick tower. It's less work overall, and less responsibility. Call me lazy, but I get the same pay and someone more eager is getting the "better" (it's actually worse by my book, but I can see how it's opinionated) work, so everyone's happy. :)

EDIT -

When I was sitting in the lobby after work waiting for my mom to get there, Bico The Bear came to start the bedtime story. My mom has bad timing.. she pulled up JUST as he started! :(.
