Title: Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Post by: iago on March 17, 2007, 07:46:48 PM
I'm going to celebrate by staying home and doing nothing. The same way I celebrate most Saturdays, as it turns out.

We have this big parade here that has a large Knights of Columbus sponsored afterparty, everybody goes there and gets hammered while listening to music and stuff. Underage public drinking is pretty widespread there and pretty much everyone I know goes there and gets drunk. Well, I usually don't go and I didn't go yesterday...instead I stayed home and watched lacrosse and played video games. Fun stuff. My friend got pretty drunk though and saw my mom there (who was sober) so that was kind of funny. My mom was just like "how old are you?" (he's 18.)

hmm, I felt like a loser but oh well.

I celebrated by going to work, playing a mandolin solo on break (they were kinda just sitting there so I picked one up and started playing, then Miro (an assistant manager) kicked my ass by playing Smoke on the Water), and then ending my night by falling down the Howlin' Tornado (google for pictures of it, it's huge++).

I find St. Patrick's Day offensive as it is celebrated in the US.  As the majority of my family is Irish and St. Patrick's Day is one of the holiest days in Ireland, where they celebrate by going to Mass.

Everything in America's huge and filled with alcohol. Easter, you hide some eggs and drink 'til the kids find them. Christmas you spike milk (egg nog, shut it.) with rum, and drink it. Thanks giving, you get in a fight with your brother in law and key his car. Just get used to being offended in America, and you'll live your life nice and care free.

I was under the assumption that theres no difference. I'm an Irish-American.

No.  There's a difference.  An Irish person is someone who has close family (ie: not 23478th cousins or whatever) or was born and lived in Ireland for a while.  Someone of Irish decent is someone whose great great grandparents moved to America.
