When I click with my scroll wheel in Firefox, it causes the error message "The URL is not valid and can not be loaded." What gives?
Firefox 2.0.0.4
Gecko 20070515
Slackware 12.0
Linux 2.6.21.5 i686

Try "scroll-clicking" on a URL, it'll open it in the browser. If you click on normal text, the browser doesn't recognize it and will give that error message.

Why are you using Firefox 2.0.0.4?
2.0.0.7 is out.

If I "scroll-click" on anything that isn't a URL, the scroller utility engages.

Perhaps there's a preference panel that shows all the features of scroll-click, and on that panel you can specify what to do for normal text. For instance, in addition to opening URLS after clicking on it, it also can copy/paste highlighted text (which can be convenient, but also can get annoying if you're writing a paper and do it accidentally!) Furthermore, if you scroll-click on a tab in Firefox, it closes it.
EDIT: well, I can't find a setting in Firefox preferences for scroll-click, or a system preference through the GUIs... maybe it's some obscure command-line thing on linux.

2.0.0.7 is out.
2.0.0.4 shipped default with Slackware, and Firefox takes several years to compile. I'll probably move to the Firefox2 beta line soon, once I get settled.

emerge firefox-bin

Using the pre-compiled one installed with the binary installer on mozilla.com = win.

Get the package from a Slackware mirror and use upgradepkg.
emerge firefox-bin
pacman -S firefox
Save one keystroke ;)

The binary installer is annoying. Extract + run for the win.

BUMP!
You don't save a keystroke; shift counts.
