Welcome me, 23 yr, CompSci grad who opened up his own coffee/ice cream shop in May. The lull of the colder months is approaching so I have more free time to join new communities (j/p)!

Not sure what this place is really about. At first I thought it was a big gaming community (which I am not part of), but now I see that it is an all around general forum for intelligent people. Not sure what the voting process and 'joining' really means though. (sigh) Oh well.

Neither am I, really, and I helped found this. It's mostly just a random group of ex-Battle.net'ers hanging out.

Basically, if you want to become a "member", you need to get leader approval and be voted in. But being a member isn't really important or even necessary, the main reason to become one is to have a say in the leadership and to influence decisions and changes.

I'm still suspicious, actually. It's a generic enough post to be made by a spambot trying to advertise his site, especially for googlebot. I'll give him a few days to respond before removing the link.

No, you're obviously not a spambot, they wouldn't post 1-line responses to every topic on the board. Can you try limiting your responses to threads where you have something more interesting to say?

Generally, if you don't have anything to say, then say nothing, not something short.

I actually stumbled here when searching for an IRC channel for Adobe Air support. There was one listed on irc.tehnet.org and so I checked it out. No Adobe channel so I did a search on 'tehnet.org' and found a wikipedia user called Jklinect. He also listed x86labs.org and is quoted as saying it 'rules'. Viola.

As far as I know, that was total bullshit. He found a vulnerability and got in trouble for showing an administrator a proof of concept.

I don't think showing administrators proof of concepts on public machines in your library is a good idea, but it shouldn't be a felony though.

Yes, it should be. It shouldn't be any different from breaking into somebody's house, sitting on their couch, and watching their TV until they came home.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a proof of concept just showing that an vulnerability exists, without actually using it for anything malicious?
I'd say it's more like opening the door, leaving it alone and then demonstrating it for the person who owns the house so that they can fix the door, but maybe my definition is all screwy?
I've heard things about the situation, but I figured they were just rumors... I'm guessing I don't know much about it because I didn't really know anyone in the vL group very well around the time it happened.

Yes, that's correct. However, the person in question (to summarize) found the vulnerability, used it to install software for his own purposes, and eventually alerted the staff. So I think the situation I posed makes sense. :)

Leaving the door open would be inviting others who are unfamiliar with the door's lack of locks to come in.
I think in this case, he just left the lights and the heat on.
