Just go.  I often hear people using excuses like it costs $50 or $100 or whatever it is, but I get the sense that it's just to rationalise their fears.  I was sort of pushed into finding a date for grad, which I think may have been a mistake, although I'm not sure.  Graduating from high school is a "landmark event" in your life, and you shouldn't blow it off.  If you show up, and it totally sucks, then leave.  You have nothing to lose but maybe a bit of money, and that money is insignificant in the scheme of your life, unlike your grad.  It's a chance to get closure and something that can leave you with a good memory of this stage of your life.

I don't know about Canada, but in America, we get this closure on what's called "Graduation Night", in the form of walking across a stage in a cap and gown and being handed a diploma. Afterwards, you celebrate with friends and family.

I went to my girlfriends this year, but I didn't go to mine. I bought tickets and all that for it, then crashed my car and was in the hospital for it.  :P I'm sorta glad though, I'd much rather have went with my girlfriend now then my ex.

I didn't go because I didn't have a gf and didn't want to spend all of that money just to go with a girl as friends. I don't regret not going, at that point I was just over highschool and didn't care (I didn't even want to go to graduation all that much). Sometimes though I wish I did when people talk about it. The worst was that one of my pretty good friends took his date to pre-Prom dinner at a restaurant I recommended to him, and I went there with my mom and grandmother that night and he was sitting about 3 tables from us.

I went back in 2001, alone. Almost everybody went alone, though, it was by far more common going alone than going with somebody.

It was a pretty boring night, overall, but that was before I really forced myself to be more social, so I basically spent it eating corn chips and talking to people I would have been talking to anyways.

I don't know whether I'd call my grad "good" or "bad", but I remember almost every minute of it.  It seems that most people here, whether they liked it or not, remember it too.  So keep in mind; whatever happens on your grad, you'll remember it forever. :P

(Obviously your brain thinks something is important ;))

Haha, I'm the opposite, most of grad is a blur. I remember being there with my friends, and eating a lot of corn chips. Then pizza showed up, and it was awful. There was a fake gambling area set up that nobody went to. We were outside before it, trying to ruin the shocks on a friend's rented car. That's about it.

The problem was, we had to get up extra early that morning to do the ceremony, and there was stuff going on all day. By supper time, I was tired as hell, and just wanted to go to bed. I'm sure most others felt the same way.

Got up, went to work, programmed for 8 hours, went home, watched tv, went to bed. Wanna put bets on that? :)

But seriously, I remember any special event to roughly the same extent. I found that grad is no more or less memorable than my last dental visit.

I remember that no more than I'd remember 12 proms ago.

But you don't have 12 proms, you only have one.  It would lessen the significance of the event if there were 12 of them.  If you had only one dental appointment your whole life, you would probably remember it reasonably well.

Your point about remembering a seemingly non-significant event as well as grad is like me saying that I remember yesterday as well as prom.  I likely won't remember yesterday in two weeks, but I'll still remember grad.

I only had one dentist appointment in the last 8 or so years, so I remember it fairly well. :)

They tell me every year.

My last visit was last year, though, and I intend to go this year. I just had a big gap when I didn't.

On the plus side, I have healthy teeth. No cavities or nothing! :)

I went to my girlfriend's two years ago, but I didn't go to mine last year. It worked out rather well since the vast majority of my friends were in her grade. But yeah, it was pretty boring, I remember it in far less detail than iago remembers his. The party afterwards is what was fun, and what I'll remember.

And yes, I had a top hat. Because I'm a pimp like that.

No one goes to the prom for the prom, they go to the prom for the afterparty. At least around here.
Prom sucked, after party was great.

Usually no one stays with their dates at the after party, so I sort of forgot about my date in like the middle of the prom.
I couldn't find her so I just went to a huge after party, then hopped to smaller parties after that.

But yea, it's not something you should miss. I would of deeply regretted it if I didn't go, even if the Prom sucks just the memories of getting all dressed up, picking up my date, taking pictures, etc is a memorable thing.

I went to prom my junior year (it's a junior/senior thing) and it sucked.  I had just recently gone back to school from my bad accident where my knee got all kinds of fux0r'd.  I sorta wobbled into the place then sat down cause moving hurt too much.  After party was just bowling and then Village Inn (so VI for me).

I skipped my senior prom 'cause I didn't want to spend $200+ to go to dinner and the dance and all.  The girl I was going to most likely go with would've been fun to be there with, but I just said fuck it and hung out at a friend's apartment.

Ahaha. Your expression in that picture is priceless, Newby. ;)

I think prom is way overrated. This might be because I went to four, plus four winter balls, but eh. I like the excuse to go dancing, but after the third or so dance, it just gets boring... So by senior prom, it's pretty lame. Glad I don't have to do that anymore.

Is that how it was at your school?  At mine we could attend 2 proms.  Prom where I graduated consisted of Juniors and Seniors, and I went to both my Junior and Senior prom with my girlfriend at the time.  I thought that was normal?

We had a Junior prom and a Senior Prom, but anyone can go if invited by a Junior or Senior, respectively. Junior prom is a few weeks before senior.

Mine is the same as Antivirus's I think. We have one prom, for Juniors and Seniors, and Frosh/Soph can go if they're invited by either of the former. Most people go as Juniors, then the next year as Seniors, so effectively 2 proms.

The school I went to for a majority of high school was in such a hick town that all grades had to be invited for there actually to be enough people to make prom happen: thus why I went every year (not with an upper-classmen). That's the only school I've heard of that did it that way, though.

You wanna know hick?  The class before one of my friend's had an orgy in the woods after graduation or prom, I can't remember which.  30ish folks out in the woods screwing.  The school got counselors for them if psychological issues arose.

OR

Another town, south of the town mentioned above, has a yearly street dance.  They close main street and drink and dance the night away.

My city does that every couple years, and we definitely aren't hick. They shut down the major intersection in the dead centre of the city, and have a great big party.

That's pretty much what it is.

I guess, iago, if you saw that street party you'd think "shit, this is the most hick thing I've ever seen."  It's in a small mountain town, one of the ones in NM that isn't all FING CRAZY hippie
