Title: Swine flu funnies
Post by: CrAz3D on April 29, 2009, 08:48:17 pm
It was once said that a black man would be president "when pigs fly."  Indeed, 100 days into Obama's presidency......swine flu

If anyone honestly thinks the swine flu is a bigger deal than any other flu: go become an old feeble man and get it and die, please.

I swear, with how much this fucking flu has been played up in the media, you would at least think it's symptoms might be slightly worse than the flu that we had last year... How many people in the US died of the flu last year? 35,000?

1/35,000? I remember that from another thread...

Problem is the 1/20 death rate, with it's fast spreading, and the overall lack of comprehensive preparation except for everyone but the UK.

However, you probably already know this, and are just acting dumb to be funny. This is the humor board right?

You clearly know nothing about it.

The death rate is 7% (normal flu is less than 1%), and the vast majority of deaths are people between 20 and 40. So yes, it's a bigger deal from other flu outbreaks.

The World Health Organization is preparing for a level 5 pandemic in the next 48 hours (moving to level 6, the highest, within a week), and we've been told to prepare for a 30% reduction in workforce due to sickness. If 7% of those 30% of people die from it, that's quite bad.

I haven't followed this at all really, how do you prevent getting it? Up until yesterday I thought this was food-borne.
Title: Re: Swine flu funnies

You get it the same way as standard flu -- touching somebody who has it, touching something somebody who has it touched, getting coughed/sneezed on.

The problem is that the incubation period is a week or so, so you're spreading it well before you know you have it. That's the problem.

But the flu DOES originate from the pork industry.

The whole reason the meat industry lobbied them to stop calling it "swine flu" is because it hurt their profits. That's pretty lame, in my opinion. :)

That's correct, but it points to the fact that Mexicans may be more susceptible to the infection, for some unknown reason.

The reason the death rate is so much higher is because of where it's hitting. Yeah, when a disease hit's a third world country, it's going to have a higher death rate than when it hits a first world country. But clearly I don't know what I'm talking about.

And yes, the pork industry was lobbying to change the name from swine flu, because people were uninformed and assumed that you could somehow get the virus from eating pork. They're considering shutting down SDSU because one kid had it. This is so fucking dumb. But clearly I don't know what I'm talking about.

It's potentially a serious problem.  Not all of the concern is illegitimate.

You're familiar with the Influenza pandemic of 1918, I assume?  The "swine flu" is of the same strain and subtype (Influenza A, H1N1).  I highly doubt this means with any reasonable degree of certainty that it's as virulent as the 1918 outbreak, but I still think it's cause for concern.  The misinformation about the pork was unfortunate, though.

I'm quite familiar with that outbreak.

I really don't think it's reasonable to compare our knowledge and methods for handling a flu on an individual basis to those of 1918. People were dying from dehydration, that doesn't really happen anymore in America.

I don't think dehydration was what caused all of the deaths.  Certainly it was a contributor, but I think it caused an over-reactive immune system as well.  I think Influenza can cause a variety of symptoms beyond the mildly obnoxious ones like vomiting, diarrhoea, etc.

Regardless of the cause of death, the 1918 pandemic infected up to 50% of the population.  I'm not an epidemiologist, but I think that alone is a pretty serious cause for concern.  Don't viruses mutate pretty quickly?  Doesn't this mean new, more serious symptoms could arise because of this?

I think it'd be foolish to prepare for a disaster right now, but it'd be even more foolish to not take steps that prevent one.

We're prepared, but not this prepared. If the infection rate gets really terrible, then very few nations are even equipped to handle such a disaster.

It's a fucking flu! Like the flu last year. Lets say hypothetically the infection rate gets amazingly large: There's a lot of people with the flu.

I wasn't suggesting that everyone died of dehydration, I was just suggesting that our knowledge of how to handle a flu has gotten considerably better over the years.

This virus is as prone to mutation as last year's flu, and I would think a very large portion of the population got last year's flu.

Again, the typical flu symptoms are not the only symptoms caused by flu viruses.  It seems you're assuming that you know more about epidemiology and pathology than you really do.

Cytokine storm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytokine_storm) is a good example of why Influenza viruses can be really nasty.

I'm quite familiar with that outbreak.

It is, but if it becomes as virulent as the 1918 strain, there will be a lot more infected people on hand.  Again, I think you're assuming you know more about pathology/epidemiology/virology than you really do.

Again, this isn't relevant.  It's under control right now, but it's not impossible that this changes.  This is exactly why the WHO is being so cautious.

Sure, it's probably not inaccurate to call it an overreaction, but it's still prudent to be cautious.

"Dr. Embarek warned that it is important, though, not to become complacent, noting that the 1918 pandemic started mildly in the spring, then returned with a deadly vengeance in the fall."
