Title: women and govt shutdown
Post by: CrAz3D on October 16, 2013, 10:11:35 pm
there have been a lot of posts from my facebook friends about how we should let women run things, because they wouldn't crash the US govt.

I stumbled on this article on reddit today: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2010/08/90-years-later-women-vote-more-often-than-men/

sooo....women do run things?

Women voting men into power isn't equivalent to women actually running the government.

but, since citizens run things (by electing the politicians), dont citizens run things?

No, I don't buy that at all. Citizens choose from a small set of shitty people who will run things. This is not equivalent to running things.

OT sorta...but I hear that from a lot of friends that dont vote. "Lesser of two evils"...blah blah blah. It's kind of fucking stupid how much people hate Congress. Elect better people. Fuck. Duh. I've never understood this crazy ignorant, "I didnt vote so not my fault" mentality. You didnt vote, so OF COURSE it's your fault.

I'm not sure what your point is. It seems completely irrelevant.

Yes, you can elect better people, but someone from one of the two parties is almost certainly going to win, so not voting for one of them is equivalent to not voting.

"elect better people". might as well say "make government better". i can make hard problems seem easy too, see?

The two major parties are only the major parties because people buy into the hype. Further, even within the two party system, people that don't get involved are the problem. Want a better R/D candidate? Get into the primaries. Want better primary candidates? Get involved with local party groups that offer the candidates.

Here's an explanation done better than I can

Basically, FPTP is stupid, the spoiler effect prevents people from voting for who they want, and our government is full of assholes nobody likes.

I was going to link CGPGrey if you hadn't. :)

Voting is totally the "lesser of two evils". It also falls into Tragedy of the Commons a bit. Politics sucks. Look at other videos posted by that same guy that rabbit linked - CGPGrey - he gives a great overview of a number of alternative voting systems.

watched video. seen video before.

I'll agree that it makes more sense to have majority (so an actual majority wins) elections as opposed to a plurality system. runoffs make sense to me.

A quick google didnt show me what sorts of elections were plurality or majority based.
