Title: The Golden Compass
Post by: AntiVirus on June 13, 2007, 03:52:01 pm
This book is great, hopefully the movie doesn't ruin it!  It looks good, but that doesn't mean anything.  Do the "Meet your Daemon" thing and tell me what you are!! :)

Edit: the test paired me with a fox, but I refuse!  I want a snake. :(

The test should have a special case when you enter the name "dark_drake" or "Mike:" you get a hedgehog.

That's because monkeys are funny and they'll make you laugh!

You'd go crazy if you didn't laugh, so it's only sensible that your daemon is one that looks funny. :P

Lol!  I actually did laugh at that.  Life would be dull if I didn't laugh! :P  People laugh a hell of a lot more when they are with me. :)

I really hope this movie at least does well enough to justify making the Subtle Knife and Amber Spyglass.

That Meet Your Daemon thing is weird.  Apparently I'm modest, shy, spontaneous, sociable, and assertive.  What the hell?

Anyway, I got Sophistra, a female fox.

Yeah, agreed.  A Golden Compass was an excellent book, but I did like its sequels a bit more.

Haha, yeah.  It's messed up.  It said I was modest, humble, sociable... I stopped reading after that.  I retook the test and gave answers that were opposing sociable, humble and modest, but I still got those results, lol.

It's "The" Golden Compass. ;)

I actually hated the last book (The Amber Spyglass, no?). The end became moreso "Hey let's kick Jesus' ass! Hah! The entire series led up to God-bashing." It was kind of ridiculous, to be honest. The end sucked; the second book is probably my favorite of the series.

Haha, yeah.  there was some comment on the blog for the movie that said the series was blasphemous or something.  I think it's funny that people are offended when people disagree with their religious beliefs.

LOL! Anyway, the test actually paired me with Lysandra, a tiger Daemon. Oddly enough, it says that I'm shy and outgoing.  ::)

I wouldn't really go that far. I just think the series could have had a much better ending... with like, Transformers, or something.

Meh, I didn't mind it. :\

I liked the ending.  It was a good sci-fi ending.  If you take offense to a blatantly fictional book (IE: one of His Dark Materials), you're an idiot.

I'm rereading the whole trilogy again.  I just started today and I read rougly 140 pages from The Golden Compass.  I have forgotten a lot of it.

I plan on reading the books again as soon as I finish the The Dark Tower series. Of course, The Dark Tower could take a while.

The Dark Tower series is so.. bad.. It's just.. bad. I can't stand Stephen King, though, so I have a biased opinion.

Library ftw. Amazon also has it, as does every other online book retailer.

Borders?  Barnes and Noble?  I think they both carry it.

I'm guessing he means his personal copy of the book, though I could be mistaken.

The only one I own is The Amber Spyglass, lol.  My dog chewed the corners so my parents had to buy it.

I've enjoyed The Gunslinger thorougly. I'm almost through it and am looking forward to the next book. Why don't you like Steven King? What about The Dark Tower didn't you like?

The Gunslinger started out way too slow for my interest. I understand it's a relatively long series, but when absolutely nothing in the first book made me go, "Gee, this is really worth reading!" I tend to not like books. So while the rest of the series may be significantly better (which I've heard it is from a friend), the first book is "make it or break it" for me. As to why I don't like Stephen King in general, I don't like his writing style at all. His characters really do suck, his stories are a futile attempt at "horror," and they all have really lame plot outlines. They're also really tedious to read. I read because I think it's fun; I don't want a thousand page novel that takes a year and a half to finish because it moves way too slowly for my interest. I understand a lot of horror is setting up the scene and that it has to be done intricately, but he's just over the top about it.
