General Discussion / Re: Let's hear it!

Well we're here at the first hotel in Danville, VA. Tomorrow we will be visiting Averett University (my friend was accepted there.) We made really good time (we left like 30 minutes late but arrived 2 hours earlier than anticipated...yay for no traffic.) Anyway, this "major" city we're in sucks hardcore. I did a search on googlle for a movie theater, it returned 3...1 in the city and 2 in North Carolina. VZNavigator returned a whole bunch on my cell phone, but I'm guessing they were all "nearby" NC ones. We're going to go eat dinner in a little bit and then see Talladega tonight.

Stupid spoiled rich kid. Try living in a town that lacks a movie theater, and a walmart... hell try one without even a McDonalds. Its like living in a whole nother universe and it sucks hardcode. Yay for getting to live in civilization soon!!!!!

Whoa yeah thats ugly. I'd definitely go with the butcher paper idea or sheets. You might consider making a cardboard 'template' of the lower wall section, then you'd be able to wrap paper around the cardboard and have it look very nice. After that attaching the cardboard to the wall could be done through various means. This would also have the added benefit of hiding the wall better as the cardboard will be thick enough to block it.

No point in putting a watermark over an area that's all one color.  :-\

Of course, but I just made an action to automatically slap it on there into the bottom right corner. It will atleast force someone to do a little work before they send it out which is all thats required. Also in most of the cases that I've seen if its near an edge it will just get cropped off, people can't be assed to clone them out. If you slap it over the actual image you destroy the image and as such its not really worth looking at.

There really isn't a nice solution to the problem of stealing images. Before I hadn't worried about even putting a mark on them but I plan to now because I intend to eventually get my site up and running.

So I spent some more time post processing a few of my pictures and came up with these. Its a large improvement for a couple of them.

I've realized now that I should go back and do some more work on older images I have taken.

Goto http://www.bhphotovideo.com and look around. Probably 'digital photography' -> 'point and shoot' Looking there about the only ones you can get for under $150 are HP cameras. I don't really have much experience in this area, but going for something from Canon or Nikon is probably a smart move.

We got a considerable amount yes.

So does anyone know what the regulations for lights on the underside of aircraft at night are? There was some sort of plane flying fast overhead  just a bit ago that had a single white blinking light. On another night awhile back I observed a similar event with a fast moving plane with a single white blinking light. I suspect they are jet fighters or some other military aircraft because they have that sort of roar but I'm not entirely sure. I also know that F-16s have flown overhead during the day before as well as a squadron of helicopters.

Yup.

But I prefer to stay out of things because you know those crazy californian kids are always trying new things. First its the pink sheets and then its feeling men up in public, and the next thing you know they will be feeling men up at home and well we all know where it goes from there.

Hey, zorm, do you have any higher resolution versions of those pictures?  I'd like to use one as a background. :)

Yup, I think all of those have been cropped and resized down. What resolution are you looking for and which picture(s)? I'll see what I can do.

So there was a series of really nice storms last night. I got lots of nice pictures to the tune of 37 atleast most of which are of lightning. I'm very happy.

WWDC 05 made Leapord seem like an OS which would blow Vista away.

Microsoft only needs to say one thing to shut Apple up: DirectX 10

Let's get this straight again:

Not only has Microsoft created .NET 3.0(Crappy name) which includes the Windows Presentation Foundation along with others but:

They are setting the standard for Graphics cards of the future by forcing them to be compliant to the DirectX10 standard. It's all or nothing with card features so the life of programmers is much easier.

They are introducing GPU accelerated GUIs and tearless drawing with the DWM

They've taken strides to improve their webbrowser (Significant strides, you guys heard they dropped the IE7+ name? Yep they listened to feedback)

They secured the OS with UAC (Which has been dramatically improved btw)

as well as other things such as Bitlocker, Flip3D(Although an Expose' type thing would rock)

I'm sure theres more I'm forgetting to list but the point is they do all this AND keep backward compat (IE7, Office, .NET 3.0, hell WPF is even going to work cross platform)

Those all sound great but you won't know until its actually released if any of them are worth the bits they take up. It might be like XP which has a crapload of 'new features' all of which I promptly turned off because they suck ass and I don't want them.

Also I'll never really forgive them for IE6, to stop updating your product when you know it is broken and crap is about the worst sin you can make. Even more so when you consider that they didn't even start over from scratch for IE7 they just updated IE6. Stuff like that makes me want to puke and is one of the really nice things about open source software. Atleast if it sucks there is the option of fixing it yourself.

General Discussion / Re: Necessary Software for New Computers

A comparison of 7zip and WinRAR showed 7zip jumped to 100% CPU Usage in every aspect. I forgot but IIRC it was on digg a while ago, and the author concluded with "7zip may outperform WinRAR occasionally, but all around WinRAR is still the winner" or something to that effect.

Dunno, I've been using 7zip for years now and have no complaints. It works very well. It may use 100% cpu or close to it but who cares? Most of the time if I'm unzipping something thats acceptable but note that I haven't seen this behavior.

7zip is way nicer than WinRAR and free too.

My personal computers run without antivirus and antispyware so those would probably be the first things to be deleted if it was me. I have better things to waste cpu cycles on!

How about a text editor? I've been using Editplus for years and it hasn't made me disappointed yet. Its so good that I'm actually considering buying it.

Although you said you weren't another for me is Media Player Classic and ffdshow. I can play pretty much anything with those two.

I don't see why they took it down. Atleast if they'd leave it up it would be viewed as a legit attempt to further research and it would be a less evil act. But now that they took it down the bad guys already have it and will use it while the good guys will be left without it. Go figure.

BTW, I really don't see what the big deal is, as with all companies if they want to give away information about what you do on their services so be it. Its comparable to AT&T and the phone call database. If a company willingly gives it away their isn't anything you can do about it but cry and complain to your mommy. Afterall its not like they gave away credit card numbers or other very personal information.
