Lead's House of Shenanigans / Re: Starcraft II, anyone?
« on: July 27, 2010, 03:05:27 pm »
This game runs on shitty video cards (geforce 6500) well, but I'm not buying it.
No... Starcraft 1 ran on shitty video cards (think TNT2) well. SC2 runs on modern-day mediocre cards or better, but lots of people [myself included] haven't bothered to buy new gaming machines.

I personally dislike ITX cases--many personal experiences with awful heat dissipation resulting in destroyed parts.. yech.

General Discussion / Partition Frustration
« on: July 23, 2010, 11:21:00 pm »
It's more like, instead of a package manager, you have a package source manager. It handles everything for you. The only PITA you can complain about is how it takes forever to set up your system.
Ah. If you ahd to compile everything from source manually I would hate doing that after about 3 minutes of installing..

The nonpartitioned space is showing up as "unusable" to cfdisk, fdisk, and parted. I don't understannnnnnnnnnd. Should I try partition "nuke your machine" magic?

Because everything is compiled from source, Gentoo supports 64-bit better than any other OS. You can tailor everything to exactly what you want in terms of libraries, architecture, etc.
I see. Well I'll consider it. I hate compiling from source though. It gets tedious and becomes a PITA very fast...

Nope. I actually don't understand your problem. Can you explain it in more detail?
So I have a 320gb hard drive. Of that space, only some 200gb (max) is being used. The other space *should* show up as unformatted space, but I can't seem to access that unformatted space in either Windows 7 or Slackware 64-bit. The point of that unformatted space is just so that I can have a shared space between *nix and Windows, without having to worry about accidentally modifying the Windows partition. cfdisk SHOWS the unformatted space, it just won't let me write to it. fdisk also has that issue. Windows 7 doesn't even register that there is unpartitioned space on my HD.

Is 10gb of swap really necessary?

Also, you should try Gentoo. Slackware failed me last week on my new netbook, so I installed Gentoo and I love it. :)
I quite literally just installed everything, so I'm not really in a mood to install something anew. What's Gentoo's 64-bit support like? Also, isn't Gentoo that OS where you have to build everything, or is that something else?

10gb swap: I plan to install Blender (if I can ever get wireless working...) which can take up ridiculous system memory. I figured having extra is never a bad thing when dealing with software like that.

Have any ideas about the partition issue?

Fucking liar. The other choice you gave me was way better and obviously should have won. CHEATER. I WANT A RECOUNT.
This is Florida. THERE ARE NO RECOUNTS.

In another issue: So I have my hd set up in the following manner:
/sda1 - windows boot partition (100mb)
/sda2 - 80gb windows 7 partition
/sda3 - 40ish(?) gb slackware
/sda4 - 10gb slackware swap
i have a 320gb hd... But Win7 doesn't show the unformatted space and Slackware won't let me cfdisk / fdisk the unformatted space to add an NTFS partition to it. Anyone have suggestions?

Locutus is up and running!  And it's sickeningly fast.
Ditto Brisingr. Of course, this is my first 64-bit machine [apart from work machines] so eh. Hahah.

The 'implied best fit' is somewhat bullshit, but other than that somewhat interesting read.
Why is that? If the graph (before best fitting) truly is what their population looks like, that data set can accurately be normalized. Far crappier data that looks nothing like a Gaussian distribution has been turned into one.

I see you use the word friend loosely.
Are you saying we aren't friends? :(

Blaze, if you were assembling a team of programmers to write iPhone applications, would you hire a guy with a degree in programming which focused on VB.NET and PHP, or a guy with that degree with a certificate for completion of an iPhone development course, with the latter half taught by a developer who has had his application featured on the App Store.

I'd take the second guy too.
Where on earth do you get a programming degree based on VB.net & PHP? Any CS program I know of teaches C, Java, at a bare minimum.

I think it's kind of against Linux culture to use a hostname that one of your friends uses. I mean, of course neither will be the first computer to be named locutus, but it's not exactly.. whatever. It's just not done.
it's okay. my machine is being stupid at installing windows7 anyway. he can have locutus. i'm going to use "brisingr". =D

General Discussion / Google Blog on Algorithms
« on: July 15, 2010, 11:43:38 pm »
I was randomly surfing the interwebs and I came across this blog post by Google: http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.com/2010/02/this-stuff-is-tough.html . It led me to wondering what, exactly, the google search algorithm looks like and how they managed to scale it so well that it returns a search with millions of potential results in 1 millisecond. Any ideas?
