Playing around with Metro-style apps and the Win8/WinRT API and am curious how far I can take a bot.  If there's any interest at all I'll probably dump it into Gcode, otherwise it'll stay private.

For those of you who don't already know because of the secret message boards that don't exist for members only....  I'm going to be joining Microsoft on April 2nd!

I'll be working on the Chakra Runtime team - that's Microsoft's JavaScript engine - as a Program Manager.  Pretty excited!

Isn't there a tool you can use to finger a web server to determine what kind of server OS is running?  Or does it not need to be behind a firewall?  (i.e., it needs more than just the webserver)?

Thanks!

General Discussion / A Theory of Malware
« on: March 01, 2011, 12:35:32 am »
I was paging through a journal tonight from the ACM and I came across this article that advocated teaching a curriculum about malware in higher education.  I was a little skeptical of this until I read the author's thought "The reason we haven't solved the problem of malware is that we don't have a theory of malware."  Then I went from being a little skeptical to thinking the author was utterly ridiculous.

A theory that could completely encapsulate malware today would be so incredibly generalized (because it would have to encapsulate innumerable systems) that it would provide no value to solving such a problem, I think.

What do you think?  Do you think we just haven't academic-ized the problem enough?

General Discussion / Serial comma or no serial comma?
« on: January 20, 2011, 05:55:17 pm »
I've been a strong advocate of the serial comma.  I believe it flows well with natural speech, inserts normal separation between a list of items, and provides for a clear separation of ideas.

Gaming / SC2 Replay Parser online
« on: November 03, 2010, 04:03:53 am »
Check it out - http://robpaveza.net/sc2rep/

Written in C# and uses MBNCSUtil for things like loading the replay file MPQ and parsing the bitstream.

I will be releasing the source code soon.

As of right now, the parsing is only complete for version 1.1.x replays.  I had implemented 1.0.x, then they changed it and my updated code only supports 1.1.x.  So, I have to go back and back-port my 1.0.x code into this.

General Discussion / Consumer online backup?
« on: August 13, 2010, 10:35:20 am »
Anyone use any consumer online backup solutions like Carbonite or Mozy?  What have your thoughts been?

Carbonite really helped me on my server, but I'm concerned because they throttle bandwidth after 200gb and I'm certain I'll exceed that before too long.  My initial backup set on my brand-new, clean iMac is 18gb, and I have a ton of AVCHD files (high def movies) because I bought an HD camcorder about a year ago, that I haven't moved onto it yet.  I guess I can port them into iMovie and back up the results.... still, I'm a bit concerned.

Any thoughts?
