So the widespread use of emojis these days kinda makes forum smileys pointless, yeah?

[x86] Announcements / OMG website update??
December 27, 2024, 05:38:35 PM
Hey nerds!

I just wanted to update y'all a bit!

I moved https://www.x86labs.org to Github Pages, you can see the code @ https://github.com/iagox86/www.x86labs.org - it's basically a static site, I just renamed php to html

I moved https://forum.x86labs.org to a new server - it's a Linode Nanode instance, so it's tiny and slow but at this point this is just a museum piece so whatevers.

Cheers!

[x86] Announcements / Updated + new server (again!)
July 06, 2021, 12:30:39 PM
Wow, how long has it been!? And there's only one (minor) upgrade to SMF? Either that means it's abandoned, or perfect. Dunno which. :)

Anyways, I rebuilt the server it's on, again. Actually, my husband Chris (not Sidoh) did. This is now running as a container on a Podman server, along with all my other sites. So at least if this gets pwned for being old and janky, it will be much more difficult to do anything bad with it!

Cheers!

Love,

iago

I just updated to the latest version of SMF, and moved the forum to my new server.

If you have any problems or bugs, please tell somebody who cares :D :D :D

[x86] Announcements / Server finally died :D
August 22, 2015, 11:57:55 PM
I couldn't get MySQL to turn on this morning. I knew it was coming - it's been having harddrive problems for awhile.

So, I moved everything to Linode, and it seems to be good! Let me know if you run into any problems, something always goes wrong when I move the server.

FWIW, my last backup was a week old, so earlier today there were a couple posts missing. I just went back and copied the original files (not backups, but the files themselves) off my old server and loaded them here, and it seems to be working. :)

[x86] Announcements / Move / disband the forum/site?
December 29, 2014, 12:13:22 PM
Hey everybody,

x86labs.org is coming up for renewal in February, and the SSL cert is up for renewal like tomorrow (and it's gonna be a pain in the butt to renew the cert).

I'm wondering if I should bother? Here's my proposal (which makes my life easier):
- Move the forum to a subdomain of skullsecurity.org (since I have a wildcard SSL cert and will maintain that domain till I'm cold and dead)
- Make the forum read-only (so we can keep it as a monument, since nobody really posts anymore anyways)
- Declare a new 'official' space for us (whether it's the current Facebook group or we make a Google Group or whatever, I don't care)

Thoughts?

[x86] Announcements / TEN FUCKING YEARS!
October 11, 2014, 01:08:16 PM
Holy fucking crap, ten years ago today me and James got the forum online, which I'm counting as our official start. Congrats for remaining such cool people! We definitely did something right. :)

6 of us have managed to gather in San Francisco, it seems. Join us for a virtual drink tonight at 7pm PDT / 8pm MDT / 9pm CDT / 10pm EDT! Here's a link:

https://plus.google.com/hangouts/_/calendar/cmJvd2VzLng4NkBnbWFpbC5jb20.j7kpqs3lk6o9ckmjthmdv2vgno?authuser=0

(Hopefully that link works! It works for me, but I created it - if there are problems, I'll create a fresh Hangout and post it here)

Note: hanging out with us requires a G+ account ;)

I mentioned this on FB, but for those of you who aren't there or didn't see it...

All members/friends are welcome :D

Living in the Bay, working at the Google.

Wow, I'm surprised!  I didn't think you would leave Canada, or work at a huge monopoly corporation. It's probably a nice place to work though.

Yeah, I didn't think I'd leave Canada either, but here I am!

I wouldn't call it a 'monopoly'. On one hand, I feel bad that 99.9% of my salary comes from ad revenue; on the other hand, they're constantly changing the world for the better, and they have really good policies regading privacy (privacy is SUPER important to them, because people will jump on anything) and lock-in (it's important that every app lets you view, manage, and export all your data). So that's a plus, at least. :)

[x86] Announcements / OMG SSL!
December 30, 2013, 08:05:17 PM
I just bought a SSL cert for "forum.x86labs.org". You'll now be able to enjoy the privacy and security of SSL while we talk about all our shenanigans! :)

I'm also forcing everybody on SSL, cuz why not?

Let me know if you get any cert errors or have other issues!

[x86] Announcements / New server + update
October 10, 2013, 12:30:07 PM
Hey all,

I just updated the forum to the latest version of SMF, and also moved it to a new server. The ip address is currently the same, but it's being proxied through this address to 206.220.196.59. This will be a little slower, but it's only a temporary measure.

Let me know if you have any issues!

I'll figure out how to keep this server running when I go. Hopefully that'll go well. :)

Hey folks,

I just physically moved the server to a house I bought. Hopefully you'll notice a speed improvement, as my connection speed has significantly improved: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2831255559

[x86] Announcements / 2013 meetup!?
June 03, 2013, 03:55:28 PM
Hey guys! I'm gonna be in the Bay Area from June 13 - July 2!

How's everybody's schedules looking for another get-together? I'm thinking on Friday June 28th, perhaps? Or maybe Saturday the 29th? I'm certainly open to other days, and will start a Doodle if this gets complicated.

Who's in!?

[x86] Announcements / Apache update
October 30, 2012, 12:17:26 PM
I did a major version update on Apache last night (2.2 -> 2.4) and broke a bunch of stuff. I think it's all fixed now, but if you notice anything odd let me know!

You may have noticed some downtime this morning. It was brief and planned - I installed a UPS. So hopefully from now on, there will be less downtimes. :)

Ender's Book Club / Snowcrash [spoilers!]
August 04, 2012, 06:17:41 PM
I just read Snowcrash, and wanted to give my opinion (and hear others').

First of all, it's an enjoyable read. The narrative is fun, the comparisons are great, the action scenes are better written than most action scenes I've read, and I really didn't want to put it down. It's also really cool that he invented a lot of concepts, and frequently got things right. It also brings up some interesting questions about how we think - how we're born without language, but it becomes hardcoded.

On the downside, I thought the entire concept was kinda lame. I mean, he tied in a lot of history (I'm not even sure where the real history ends and the fiction begins), and that was cool. And the way he revealed it, I have mixed feelings about - basically, entire chapters of him learning about it through exposition (talking to the 'Librarian' program) seemed like kind of the lazy way to explain the plot. The part I didn't like was that it didn't really seem to make sense, he tried to explain away a lot of things - like how hackers are vulnerable to something that others aren't - that I didn't really buy.

Additionally, the motivation of the 'bad guys' wasn't there. Why were they doing what they were doing? I didn't buy it. Especially Raven. Even the motivation of the good guys. I understand Juanita - she wanted knowledge - but I didn't really see Hiro's motivation, or why Uncle Enzo was so willing to help Y.T. And the romance thing between Y.T. and Raven - wtf?

The ending was pretty shitty, too. The way that Raven was possibly killed, while neat (shattering all the knife weapons using a tool that was planted earlier) and the way that Uncle Enzo may or may not have been killed, I didn't get.

They also forgot to give it an ending. What happened to Hiro? Y.T.? Uncle Enzo? The people on the Raft? Y.T.'s mom? The president? It seems like they left a lot that never got explained. And why was the President even introduced? He didn't do a thing!

All that said, this was one of his first books, and it was definitely an enjoyable read.

Anybody else have opinions on it?

General Discussion / x86 meetup a success!
July 01, 2012, 05:16:51 AM
Just got back from an evening of Thai Food, cardgames, ping pong, and general hanging out with Sidoh, Newby, Ergot, Deuce, and Quik. Awesome night! It was great to meet so many x86'ers in person! I had an awesome time. I even got some pictures that I'll post when I'm back home in a week!

It was great to meet y'all, the Bay Area Meetup was a roaring success! I look forward to the midwest meetup, maybe I'll buy you guys dinner, too. :)

I can't believe I've known you guys for a decade and we finally met. Super awesome! Great folks, too, as awesome as I expected you guys to be!

General Discussion / x86 Reunion in San Francisco
June 06, 2012, 04:00:21 PM
How does June 30 (Saturday) work for everybody? Somewhere in the city? I'm open to suggestions about where, I don't know the city very well. Somewhere we can do dinner + drinks? Or separate places? I don't care! Let's plan something though :)

Naturally, I had to correct them:

It's been awhile, was fun to dig up my old code and remember how stuff worked. :)
