General Discussion / People throw away useful stuff..
« on: October 06, 2007, 08:57:26 pm »
I just got back from the recycling depot earlier today, and managed to find a few cool things:

1.8ghz system, all hard drives, pci/agp cards, and ram gutted, but after putting a video card + ram in it it powered up fine. This was an awesome find, and is now going to be my main linux box when I get a 512 ddr stick for it. I think one or two more where there, but I have no room for any more of them.

19" or 20" flat screen CRT. Almost perfect condition, one small hairline scratch thats only noticeable when you look for it. The military base here probably got rid of it because they switched to LCD's.

400mhz AMD K6-2 Baby-AT system. No USB/PS2 slots, so its basically destined to be a server. I put it aside for now until I get the time to make a IPCop box outta it.

And last, but not least, a projector. Its one of those kinds that you can plug into a computer and project onto a wall or something. The only thing that appears wrong with it is it has no bulb in it, and it seems its only 300$~ to replace it.

I saw plenty of good 15-19" monitors there, a bunch of good USB keyboards/mice, and many older AT/ATX systems. But I only have so much room in my house, so I couldn't grab more...

Unix / Linux Discussion / Filesystem for VMWare files
« on: August 22, 2007, 05:38:12 pm »
I've am just waiting for everything to back up on my server, than I am going to format it and start over. The only thing is I want to know what filesystem I should use for my .vmdk files.

I've heard xfs and jfs are great for large files, which is basicly all my disk that has my .vmdk files on it is. But I've also heard that I should stick with ext3 cause it is a bit more stable.

Speed is an issue, but the data remaining safe is my biggest concern.

Any suggestions?

General Discussion / DMCA can prohibit your ability to delete stuff?

This is just utter bullshit. Sure, its a bad idea to tell everyone how to do it, but it is the users computer, and they should have the right to remove stuff from it as they see fit.

The second beta lets people actually browse the web now. Its pretty cool, providing you browse a website that will render in it.

General Discussion / Specs of current x86labs.org server
« on: August 09, 2007, 09:08:34 pm »
I was just wondering out of curiosity what the specs are for iago's server thats running these forums. It seems to get good uptime, but i guess my main question is do the hard-disks ever spin down?

General Security Information / Full screen Java popup

Kind of scary, but I can still see my menu bar on a mac, so I know what's real and what's not. Also, a simple cmd+w closes it, so much for not being able to close it!

JavaOp Support Archive / SleepScript 0.2 Released
« on: August 01, 2007, 11:10:33 pm »
After many months of delaying, I've finally shoved myself into releasing SleepScript 0.2

From the CHANGES file:

- Added (Un)ban functions
- Added (Un)squelch functions
- Added join function
- Added reconnect function
- Now licensed under GPL
- Removed all the partyline code. It makes the plugin way to bloated.
- Major changes to code structure. This makes the plugin much easier to maintain.
- Began using CVS. This makes it easier for me to work on the plugin from different computers.

Although I have STILL been lazy and have not worked on the HTML documentation, this is a step ahead. I make no promises for when the documentation will be finished though.

And, about the partyline being removed. I removed it because I felt it was kind of useless, and it was a pain to try to clean up. I'll probably make a partyline as a seperate plugin sometime, but I know I'll get lazy and that won't happen for a long time.

Anway, feedback about the new version would be appreciated. I'm kinda stumped about what to add feature wise next.

Go here to download the new SleepScript

General Discussion / Chocolate covered coffee beans
« on: July 20, 2007, 06:35:49 pm »
I've just tried some chocolate covered coffee beans, their great. The first problem is each word I typed here for the first few minutes ended up with caps and exclamation marks all over.

The second problem is I ate over ten in under 5 minutes. Big mistake.

General Discussion / Moving to Alberta

... From New Brunswick. Never been further than Ontario, so this will be cool.

Also, any thoughts on tourisim type stuff? Nothing in big citys, and theres a limit of days we have to travel. Oh, and where driving. The Military overpays for gas mileage, which helps paying toward the house. :)

General Discussion / Mailing lists subscriber list used for spam?
« on: May 31, 2007, 03:16:41 pm »
I recently canceled all my mailing list subscriptions because I was never reading them, and they where starting to take up large amounts of space. After that, I noticed that almost all spam addressed directly to my email address disappeared. I only get about 1 every 2 weeks to that email address now, when previously I got 1-2 a day.

So, has anyone else noticed this happen to them? Perhaps the mailing list servers are compromised?

EDIT:
They where open source projects, like Debian, Horde IMP, and exim. Not commercial lists.
