General Discussion / Spit Tests Detect Cancer
« on: December 07, 2007, 05:45:34 pm »
http://www.popsci.com/popsci/technology/0d796852421b3110vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html

I was reading through the popular science site and I came up on this.

Quote
By 2011, doctors expect a painless spit cup to replace certain dreaded blood tests. Scientists working on the $12-million Human Salivary Proteome Project have recently identified 1,166 proteins in saliva, including five indicators of oral cancer. They have also found specific markers in the spit of patients with breast cancer and the autoimmune disease Sjogren's syndrome and are now working to identify the protein linked to ovarian cancer. Detecting the proteins during a routine spit test could help doctors diagnose cancers early enough to cure them, not to mention spare patients painful needle pricks.
That would be nice.  It would save a lot of money and be relatively easy and take a lot less time for the patient.

Hehe.  That one is funny, but my favorite is the Barney one followed by the Lion King one.  The song is pretty horrible and lasts forever, but it's still pretty funny. :D

AntiVirus' Home for Lost Toys / For all you Zombie Lovers

I am curious how many people already play this game on this forum.  I would be very suprised if iago hasn't snooped around on this site before, espeically since he even has a site about zombies!

Anyway, this is a browser based multi-player game where you are either a zombie or a survivor trying to make your way through the City.  If you're a zombie you go around trying to kill and infect survivors, and if you're a survivor you try to avoid the zombies (or kill them if you can!) and work on leveling.  You can pick from about 5 different classes to play as a survivor, such as a doctor (me), a Scientist, a nurse, a police officer, and a few others.
You have action points which you can use every day to advance yourself through the city or level up your character.  You get a new action point every half hour, and the maximum of action points you can have is 50 (I think).  You can use your action points to do multiple things.  You can help barricade buildings, spray paint messages on walls, talk to people in the building with you, attack, heal, use an item, and run from building to building.  If you are running out of Action Points you should take shelter in a building you can get into and wait or you will probably fall pray to wondering zombies.

It's a fun game and it is not time demanding what-so-ever.  There is a wiki that you use to get updated on recent zombie movements and every time you log back in you are updated on what has happened around you since you were last on.  The Wiki has  ALOT of information and a city map so you don't get lost.

Hopefully some of you will join me in the game.  Unless you pick to play a zombie, then stay away from me!

General Discussion / True Random Number Generator

Ordinary random number generators found in most computers in use today are 'pseudo-random' numbers that use various algorithms to pick the numbers from large pre-compiled databases of numbers obtained by methods such as rolling the dice.

Anyone who has access to such a database from which the pseudo-random number is picked, can accurately predict the next number that comes out of such generators.

But, the 'Quantum Random Bit Generator' (QRBG121), which is the engine for QRBGS, is a fast non-deterministic random bit (number) generator whose randomness relies on intrinsic randomness of the quantum physical process of photonic emission in semiconductors and subsequent detection by photoelectric effect.
I found that to be pretty interesting.

This book is great, hopefully the movie doesn't ruin it!  It looks good, but that doesn't mean anything.  Do the "Meet your Daemon" thing and tell me what you are!! :)

Okay guys.  This is a family site and I was wondering if you guys would give your honest opinion about it.  What would you change, what don't you like about it, and what is your first impression.  We are curious if the reason why we don't get many hits is because of the over all layout of the site or the impression it leaves on people.  This is not an advertisment, I am just honestly curious what you guys suggest and yours thoughts.

Thanks!

Blizzard, WoW and Bots / Problems with WoW
« on: May 31, 2007, 12:46:26 am »
Damnit this is rather annoying.  I'm trying to play WoW, but every time I freaking log into the server with one of my characters everyone but the NPC's are "Unknown" and naked and then about 15 seconds later I disconnect.  Sometimes only my backpack will appear and all the items in it are ?.

I have read so many topics about this and like everyone else that has this problem, none of them are helpful!  I don't have the checksum offload setting (atleast that I could find), but I do have the duplex setting which I set to the 100 Full Duplex with nothing to show for it.  Nothing seems to work and it's rather annoying.  Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?  I am connecting using a 2Wire 1701HG router and I already portforwarded.  I am wirelessly connected and I can't connect using an ethernet cord very well because the modem/router is in my parents office room which is connected directly to their room.

Any ideas?

P.S.
When I used to be able to connect to my Linksys router I had no problems with any of the games I played, including WoW... but for some reason my Linksys router is "shot" and will not allow any computer to connect to it wirelessly, but will allow direct connections. *sigh*  Technology hates me.
