Who wants to play minecraft? I have a heavily modded server up and running. It'd be fun to play with some people.

Anyone interested?

General Programming / Let's talk IDEs
« on: July 31, 2013, 07:19:28 pm »
I think those kinds of standards are a little goofy when an IDE can just reformat code to your liking.

We have "standards", but it's really only to avoid conflicts due to formatting.

Depends on the IDE, but yeah, tools are the best way to enforce coding standards.  However, this only works if you have such tools, the tools are configured properly across the entire team, and everyone is using them.

If your IDE can't reformat code, it's not worth using.

Doing those things are much easier than expecting/trusting people to write code to conforming to standards.

Does anyone have experience doing this? I'd imagine they're really only using geoip stuff, but I haven't looked into it much.

Does anyone know of free Canadian or UK webhosts that allow PHP or something I can use to hit the facebook API with?

Entertainment District / TV: Shameless (US)
« on: April 13, 2012, 03:55:21 pm »
I love this show! I think it's pretty hard to make a fairly somber drama as captivating as Shameless is. It's based on a series by the same name in the UK, which has done pretty well and is in its 9th season. I blasted through the two available seasons in a week or so.

Does anyone watch it?

General Discussion / Free VPS for five+ weeks

ChunkHost is looking for beta testers.  They're handing out 512 MB memory / 20 GB disk / 600 GB / 1 IP address bandwidth VPS instances for free right now.

From the FAQ --
  • You have to enter a credit card number, but only to verify your identity (I assume they don't want multiple signups)
  • They won't bill you for anything unless you give them permission to (i.e., you'll have to opt into further service after the beta ends)
  • VPS instances are hosted on reasonably beefy servers with Xen installed, so as long as there isn't too much load, you have a lot of CPU to play with
  • Images available: Debian / Ubuntu / CentOS
  • Setup only takes a couple of minutes after signup

Even if you're mildly interested, there's really not much to lose.

Academic / School / The Puzzle Thread!
« on: March 17, 2011, 04:29:31 pm »
Lots of smart people here.  This calls for a puzzles thread.  I've heard a few new (and old) ones recently, and thought I'd share.  Here's how I'm gonna run it:

1. All puzzles will be listed in this post.  I'll edit the post to add new ones.  Add a post/send a PM and I'll add yours to this post.
2. PM answers, add posts to ask questions.
3. I'll indicate who has solved each of the puzzles underneath it.

Let's do this.

Quote
You gather 100 perfect logicians. You tell all of them the following:
  • They will be placed in a room with 99 other perfect logicians, in a circle so they can all see eachother
  • Their head will be painted a particular color; they cannot see the color of their own head, but everyone else can
  • At least one of the hundred's head's will be painted blue
  • You will flip the lights on and off
  • If they figure out their head is painted blue, they must leave next time the lights go off
  • They are not allowed to talk or signal each other in any way. They may only observe the others, and leave if/when they figure out their head is blue.

You proceed to paint all of their heads blue, and begin the exercise. What happens, if anything, and when?

Quote
Prove or disprove: you can completely fill a cube with finitely many smaller, all-differently-sized cubes.

Quote
You have 100 pennies.  Exactly 50 of them a heads-up, but you don't know which ones.  If you're blindfolded, how would you divide the pennies up into two groups with an equal number of heads?  Repeat the same exercise when exactly 10 of them are heads-up.  You're not allowed to feel the pennies to test if they're heads up.  Say you're only allowed to touch the pennies by gripping them on the edges.

I came across this problem recently

Given [latex]\{ f_m(\mathbf{x}) \}_{m=1}^M,\ f_m(\mathbf{x})\ :\ X \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}[/latex] and denote
[latex]
\mathbf{f}(\mathbf{x}) = \begin{bmatrix} f_1(\mathbf{x}) & f_2(\mathbf{x}) & ... & f_M(\mathbf{x}) \end{bmatrix}^T
[/latex]

Under what assumptions is the matrix
[latex]
H = \int_X \mathbf{f}(\mathbf{x}) \mathbf{f}(\mathbf{x})^T d \mathbf{x}
[/latex]
strictly positive definite? Here integration is component-wise.

General Programming / Rails
« on: January 29, 2011, 04:06:29 pm »
What are peoples' thoughts regarding Ruby on Rails?

I've done PHP development off and on for about nine years now, and I've gotta say I find rails pretty refreshing in a lot of ways.  Sometimes it's very frustrating because it's difficult to make something exactly the way you want to without violating the tenants of rails, and I've never felt limited in this respect when it came to PHP.  Man is it nice to not have to muck around with SQL, though.  Active Records and associations are pretty beautiful.

Rapleaf uses rails, apparently, which is why I'm trying to familiarize myself with it.

RULES OF THE GAME

(similar to when we moded armin's band photo into sfw porn in which he was holding a pencil in a pornographic way)

1. Edit the photo so that it (at least slightly) resembles the last iteration
2. You must edit the most recent version

General Discussion / VPS Providers
« on: June 20, 2010, 07:12:32 pm »
Has anyone had any experience in the VPS/dedicated host realm?

I'm in the business for one.  It doesn't need to be extremely fancy (I can probably get by with 0.5 - 1 GB RAM, ~ 1 GHz CPU, ~500GB bandwidth), but shared hosting is becoming less feasible.

Anyone have recommendations?  I've been looking around and keeping a list of what I find, but if anyone has something they've had personal experience with, I'd love to hear about it.
