We've had 4 days of Thunderstorms and 5 more are predicted. This sucks. Bring back the 80 degree weather and sun.

I really don't think it's reasonable to compare our knowledge and methods for handling a flu on an individual basis to those of 1918. People were dying from dehydration, that doesn't really happen anymore in America.
I don't think dehydration was what caused all of the deaths. Certainly it was a contributor, but I think it caused an over-reactive immune system as well. I think Influenza can cause a variety of symptoms beyond the mildly obnoxious ones like vomiting, diarrhoea, etc.
Regardless of the cause of death, the 1918 pandemic infected up to 50% of the population. I'm not an epidemiologist, but I think that alone is a pretty serious cause for concern. Don't viruses mutate pretty quickly? Doesn't this mean new, more serious symptoms could arise because of this?
I think it'd be foolish to prepare for a disaster right now, but it'd be even more foolish to not take steps that prevent one.
We're prepared, but not this prepared. If the infection rate gets really terrible, then very few nations are even equipped to handle such a disaster.
The reason the death rate is so much higher is because of where it's hitting. Yeah, when a disease hit's a third world country, it's going to have a higher death rate than when it hits a first world country. But clearly I don't know what I'm talking about.
And yes, the pork industry was lobbying to change the name from swine flu, because people were uninformed and assumed that you could somehow get the virus from eating pork. They're considering shutting down SDSU because one kid had it. This is so fucking dumb. But clearly I don't know what I'm talking about.
It's potentially a serious problem. Not all of the concern is illegitimate.
You're familiar with the Influenza pandemic of 1918, I assume? The "swine flu" is of the same strain and subtype (Influenza A, H1N1). I highly doubt this means with any reasonable degree of certainty that it's as virulent as the 1918 outbreak, but I still think it's cause for concern. The misinformation about the pork was unfortunate, though.

@CrAz3D: The best way to avoid complaints of bias is to use news sources with a liberal bias, obviously. NPR is a good choice.
Liberal bias is also known as reality.
