General Discussion / What's the big deal with Vista?
« on: February 07, 2007, 06:29:41 pm »
From what I can see, there are very few "ground-breaking" differences between Vista and Windows XP.  Actually, I think the only difference most people will "feel" is the increased demand on their systems.  All the people on this board who I expected to push and cheer for Vista have (Warrior, Myndfyre, etc.), and everyone who  I expected to be critial of Vista has (iago, ...), and it seems like a bunch of others just got overwhelmed by the cheering crowd and have gotten all hyped about this new operating system themselves.

Actually, there seems to be a striking resemblance between the attitude towards this product, and a political allegience; it's so predictable, boring, and often has more to do with what you've been conditioned to support than what has shown itself to be worthy of support.

"Wow guys, I just installed an hyped properietary operating system.  I don't know why this is a good thing, but does it mean I can play with the cool kids now?"

General Discussion / Pornography
« on: December 23, 2006, 01:45:14 pm »
Please be honest.  There is no sense to lying in this poll, and if you do lie, you are only adding to your long list of sins, not reducing them :P.

If you don't mind, please elaborate on your choice.
1) If you feel guilt, in what way, specifically, do you feel guilty?
2) If you feel guilt, why do you view it anyways?
3) If you feel guilt, are you or aren't you religious?  If you are, do you think your religious beliefs affect whether you feel guilt about this or not?
4) If you feel guilt, how often, on average, do you view?
5) Did you feel no guilt at first, but after viewing on occasion for a lengthy period of time (several years), develop a sense of guilt? (Because of unusual things you saw?)
6) If you feel no guilt, how often, on average, do you view?
7) If you feel no guilt, are you or aren't you religious?  If you are, do you think your religious beliefs affect your attitude towards pornography?

Let me know any of your other thoughts!

Not unless we're saying the same thing -- which I don't believe we are.

Type two dashes into Word, keep typing a few words and see what it turns it into.  ;)
It turns into the em dash, I know.  Two dashes is the older convention for fixed-width typewriters and such.  That's why it's still considered valid in American English.

You know so much about nothing.

Academic / School / Time
« on: July 16, 2006, 11:00:47 pm »
What is time?  Is it absolute?  What does "simultaneity" mean?  Is time travel possible?  Is time travel just "theoretically" possible but impractical to consider, or would it be easy to do?  Do velocities add -- for example, if a train is going 10 m/s wrt the ground, and a ball on the train is going 5 m/s wrt the train, is the ball going 15 m/s wrt the ground?  Does mass change with velocity?  If we were in a ship's cabin going at a constant velocity, would we be able to conduct any kind of physical experiment that would reveal we are moving?  For example, would the results of any experiment be different inside a ship's cabin than it would be on "static" ground?

General Discussion / Linux versus BSD
« on: July 13, 2006, 10:54:25 pm »
I've often heard that, even when considering any Linux distribution, the only advantage to using Linux over BSD is a superior filesystem.   While, on the other hand, for nearly anything else, BSD has the edge on Linux.

I feel I don't know enough about Linux, and especially not enough about BSD, to make a good comparison.  If anyone can think of advantages and drawbacks to using Linux (choose your favourite distribution) over (Free)BSD, please post them here.  Thanks :).

What do you think:

Is the set of natural numbers (integers >= 1) smaller than the set of integers?  (Of course, both have an infinite number of elements).

What about the set of integers and the real numbers?

(To continue offtopic ;)), Joe did make a decent point  :D.  While Warrior may or may not have a lower percentage of his total posts in the trashcan (considering posts from an old account), Joe registered his current account on October 31, 2004, and Warrior registered his current account on October 14, 2004; since Joe registered (close to 2 years ago), the proportion of Warrior's posts that have entered the trashcan is 50% higher than the proportion of Joe's posts that have entered the trashcan.
