General Discussion / Coding, Security, and Other Blogs/ Sites
« on: September 08, 2012, 06:36:34 pm »
For me, I absolutely hate trying to find new blogs to subscribe to just because of the sheer number of blogs out there.  It's finding quality and interesting ones that teach me something or give invaluable insight that is often daunting for me.  I seem to normally stumble upon blogs that I end up subscribing to/ regularly checking if someone links me to a notably interesting/ entertaining/ informational blog post (i.e. I didn't start reading Coding Horror until someone linked it in a post here).  Or a blog post is linked to from a news site/ community that I regularly check.  For example, I came across an interesting blog post today by a former Blizzard developer, Patrick Wyatt, when it was posted on Slashdot (definitely a good read, it's the first of a three part series, I definitely look forward to reading the next two parts).

This got me thinking, what blogs everyone here subscribes to/ regularly reads, including any sites like Slashdot?

I think the reason I've been reading Slashdot for all these years is because the moderators generally do a good job of aggregating news and things that I find interesting and care about/ want to read... plus the comments can often be extremely insightful, informational, and funny.

General Discussion / VPS Hosting
« on: June 10, 2012, 09:50:19 am »
Well, after I failed to secure a job offer from any of my top 4... I'll be attempting to stop sucking and become awesome instead over the next six months or so.  One of the many goals I have set for myself is to setup a blog and start posting to it regularly, as well as play around with different web technologies (i.e. Ruby on Rails, Python, PHP, etc.).

Back when I was in college I had shared web hosting but now I want more control administering the server my blog will be running on (administration of blog's database and what not).  I'm pretty cheap so I don't want to pay a lot of money for a VPS, and I don't imagine I'll be getting a lot of traffic to my blog, so I don't think I should need to pay $20+/mo for a VPS.  Anyone have recommendations on quality, reliable inexpensive VPS hosting services?

I'm thinking OpenVZ should be fine for what I need it for, but I'm open to considering Xen based solutions... anyone have a preference?

In terms of OS, I'm leaning towards CentOS 5/6 (other options seem to be Debian 6 and Ubuntu 10.04/10.10/11.10)... but really it doesn't matter that much to me.  I'm familiar with both RPM and Debian based distributions for the most part.

What I'm not sure about is how much RAM I will need or possibly need.  I'm not sure if 128MB will suffice or if I need to pay for 256 or even 512.

I've done some research on VPS hosting, but I know that some people here like Sidoh have a lot more experience with such, so any advice or tips would be appreciated.

General Discussion / Tablets + Traveling
« on: April 08, 2012, 03:38:47 pm »
I'm going to do some traveling over the next couple of months to go city hunting and scout possible cities that I'd like to move/ look for work, and it occurred to me I'll probably want a good mobile web-enabled device to help me in my quest.  I absolutely hate bringing my almost 7 year old laptop with me when I travel... it's so damn archaic and clunky and pain in the ass to lug around, especially now that the airlines rape you in luggage fees.

I have an iPhone but trying to browse webpages, navigate the multiple safari tabs, etc. makes it cumbersome to use quickly... plus the Google Maps app doesn't talk to me and tell me directions in real-time.  Anyhow, I'd rather not have my phone battery go dead because I'm using it to look up shit on the internet and what not.

I remember Chavo and Blaze mentioning months ago about how they loved their ASUS Transformers, and I really like the sleek, seamless looking integration of the attachable keyboard, however I'm wary of buying the newer ASUS Transformer Prime because of its issues... i.e. its offline GPS functionality is broke and must not be able to be fixed solely through software, since ASUS is going to be offering some GPS dongle as a bandaid starting April 16th.  I'm not keen on paying full-price for a broken product... of course ASUS updated their website so that it no longer mentions the GPS feature.  Seems like they do that a lot.

The only other product that I currently have on my radar as a possible buy is the iPad 3.  But I'm not very pleased with my iPhone/ iOS (more of a displeasure with Apple and their walled garden, lack of customization of the OS, etc.).  So my gut tells me I'm going to regret buying an iPad 3 because I seriously regret buying my iPhone over an Android device.

I think my budget is going to be $600 - $650 max... any advice or suggestions on other products out there that suit my needs?

General Discussion / New Year's Resolutions
« on: January 02, 2011, 09:14:25 am »
So up until last evening at Outback with a bunch of my buddies from college their girlfriends, I hadn't give much thought to my New Year's resolution.  Sigh, but when the waitress asked how the checks should be divided, it dawned on me I was the only one paying for just themselves aka single person, and has been that way for a depressingly long time.  So I guess my New Year's resolution is to change this, even though it's not like this hasn't been a goal of mine that I haven't been trying to change =\.

So any of y'all have a New Year's resolution?

The reporter was really good, asked me some really insightful questions. Glad the story turned out well!

All you need to do is get tell one of the reporter's your gay and looking for a hubby and then that 1-10% of the population who are gay men will come will come flocking to you!

Real football is about the only sport I find worth watching.  American football is too boring and has too much down time to keep my ADD in check.

General Discussion / Age Differential
« on: May 22, 2010, 12:00:46 am »
Scenario A:  A 25 y/o man is dating a 20 y/o woman.

Scenario B:  A 35 y/o man is dating a 30 y/o woman.

Society is pretty messed up in that it is less socially acceptable for scenario A to occur than scenario B, at least from my perception of how society views it.  Doesn't make sense to me.

Don't even get me started on how society somehow deems older woman dating a younger man as socially taboo.  Times are changing but as of now things like this seem more like a novelty than widespread social acceptance.

General Programming / [win32] Detecting Installs and windows updates

Why are all the topics I can be helpful in get locked, damn.

\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Detect
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Download
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install

These registry keys have values that should give you adequate information to detect if an Windows Update is in progress, especially the latter three I listed.

General Discussion / This is new to me!
« on: December 31, 2009, 10:50:13 am »
So I had realized that I don't have many people's IM information (I have a few like Rabbit, Sidoh, Towelie, and perhaps one or two others)... and decided to just go around peeping at people's profiles to jack theirs... and noticed:

I'm assuming this is old... and that I just never noticed iago's effeminate side.

General Discussion / DROID
« on: October 28, 2009, 10:43:38 pm »
Fuck yeah.  Motorola Droid comes to Verizon 11/06/09.

I've been eligible for my new-every-2 for a few months now, and I'm glad I waited.

I've been waiting for an Android phone to come to Verizon.  I've been hesitant to get an iPhone because I dislike Apple's treatment of developers on platforms like the iPhone.  They're nazi control freaks, of course it's in their rights to be, but it's also my right to boycott their products.

Fuck yeah.  I also find technical aspects about the iPhone lame, such as not being able to replace the battery myself.  In my opinion, they do shit like that to lock in customers and make them depend on them.  Sure Apple fanboys may spout plausible technical reasons why shit like that was decided... I'd rather not buy a product designed in such a way.

iago, buddy ol' pal, my vegan homie you know I just razz you for not eating meat because I <3 you :D.
Blaze, my Canadian brotha, I wish I could be as cool as you!

Anyways, I figure I might as well try joining.  Everyone around here's pretty cool, and while they might not know it, there's some pretty smart people here who I admire.
