General Discussion / 20 petaflops supercomputer
« on: February 03, 2009, 01:07:16 pm »
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/772/1050772/ibm-petaflops-supercomputer-tabs-us-nukes

Holy jesus.

Quote
Boringly dubbed "Sequioa", the aim is to get the system, which will be housed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in a series of 96 racks, to log performance speeds of up to 20 petaflops.

Boasting over 1.6 million processors and some 1.6TB of memory, the Sequoia system will initially be used to keep track of the US' mountain of aging nukes and simulating nuclear explosions, er, tests to determine whether the weapons are stable and safe (irony?!) for use. The number of cores the supercomputer will have is, as of yet, a closely guarded secret.

If you are wondering, a flop is an acronym meaning FLoating point Operations Per Second.

I'm sure you guys have seen previews for this movie. I really enjoyed it, I would recommend either going to see it in theaters, or renting it when it comes out (or "buying" it, if you so choose). It was pretty powerful and it had great actors for the roles. I don't know how accurate of a portrayal it was, but it was good enough for me :P

I would be singing at the opening of the memorial at the Pentagon today, but I can't get a movement order as a freshman to go off campus yet... Fuck, it sucks being a plebe.

I really like their presentation of this album. I haven't dled it or listened to it, but I really like how they offer different qualities... all for free. They are going in the right direction.

This is a thread testing an idea of having a Serious Discussion Board or topics marked to be so. It WILL be heavily moderated.

***PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING RULES BEFORE POSTING***
1. This is a Serious Discussion thread-- only intellectual arguments and discussion are permitted, and they are to be done so in a civilized manner.
2. Make a concise point. Use sufficient evidence where needed, and support your opinion fully leaving nothing unanswered.
3. Clearly draw a conclusion. (Are you following the pattern yet?)
4. DO NOT GO OFF-TOPIC.
5. No flaming, trolling, or flame baiting is allowed. This is strictly prohibited.
6. Any post that does not contribute to the thread will be deleted.
7. Speak using correct punctuation/grammar/spelling
8. Finally, use your common sense and judgment while posting. I know everyone has this.

Now that all of that has been said...

The topic for this discussion will be the legality of marijuana and its surrounding issues. Here are some questions to get you started:

Do you believe marijuana should be legalized?
Should it be used for medical purposes only?
What about the "war" on marijuana?
Incarcerations due to it?
Health problems to the society?
etc.

Remember, this is an intellectual discussion!
