Most people probably have no idea who he is, and his death wasn't widely reported, but Gary Gygax, the inventor of Dungeons and Dragons, died earlier this week.

He was honoured by Blizzard in their World of Warcraft 2.40 patch (I'm told).

Today's xkcd is a tribute to him.

Yesterday's Order of the Stick is another tribute to him.

So there you go, one of the great men of our age (and probably one of the biggest indirect influences on my life) is gone. :(

I heard about this on Monday, I think.  Tis a very sad event, indeed.

Edit:  Must have been Tuesday.
And like a fool I believed myself, and thought I was somebody else...

Joe

Yeah, he's not honored in the game, but the entire content patch is dedicated to him.

QuoteIn Memoriam: Gary Gygax

Blizzard Entertainment would like to dedicate the patch in memory of Gary Gygax. His work on D&D was an inspiration to us in many ways and helped spark our passion for creating games of our own. As avid D&D players and fellow game developers, we were all saddened by the news of his passing; we feel we've lost a true adventuring companion. Thanks for everything and farewell, Gary. You will be missed.

You might be right about that, Joe.

One must ask oneself: "do I will trolling to become a universal law?" And then when one realizes "yes, I do will it to be such," one feels completely justified.

As coming from a guy who has been reading his material and visiting the tomb of horrors since I was a young kid, this is definitely a sad time. My hack master group tonight finished up early and went out for drinks to a toast to gary. He'll be sorely missed.
