Well, you could always get smartmontools and query the various failure counters and test the drive.

So, did you ever run smartmontools?  It dumps a lot of detailed technical information, but you typically only need to look for # bad sectors and certain types of failures (forget which) to decide if the drive is dying.  Before smartmontools, I had no idea that modern harddrives had these monitoring capabilities built-in.
