Sync files on webserver - Dropbox alt
« on: December 06, 2011, 04:44:56 pm »
I have my desktop and my laptop.  I want to be able to sync files without having to have both machines on.  For a group project I'm working on, we're using dropbox.  It seems nifty.  That said, I'd like to have something similar, but hosted by me (not Dropbox, but with my dailycrazed.net hosting) so I have more control.

So....know of an open source and easy-to-use dropbox alternative?

Kthnxbai.

What kind of control do you need over it that Dropbox doesn't give you? If you're paranoid because their privacy policies aren't exactly wonderful, that's fine. But as a product, dropbox is pretty excellent.

Interesting!

looked at sparkle a little...wonder when it'll come about

I dont care for privacy (for now, but will in a few short years).  I like the product, but I want to host everything myself (in case company folds, etc)

I looked at iFolder, which looks sweet, but wont work on my host (dreamhost).  Someday, when I have my own office, I'll want all sorts of nifty tech stuff, but I guess I'll likely just hire an IT guy to do it all....whatevs then, I Spose

It's very unlikely that dropbox folds anytime soon. They have a ton of really smart people working for them (most of their engineers are from MIT. CTO is from there and recruits like crazy).

They're hiring bunches and have tons of VC money. I don't know much about their business model, but I think they're probably doing pretty well and will continue to grow.

As for sparkleshare - It looks like it already is 'about'?
