Pretty crazy that we're closer to 2030, than we are 2005. Where did the time go!

<k2xl> in 1998, i made a C++ program to calculate pi to a billion digits.
<k2xl> i coded it on my laptop (pentium 2 i think) and then ran the program.
<k2xl> the next day i got a new laptop but decided to keep the program running.
<k2xl> it's been over seven years now since i ran it. and this morning it finished calculating.
<k2xl> the output:
<k2xl>      "THE VALUE OF PI TO THE BILLIONTH DIGIT IS = "
<k2xl> mindblowing eh?
<k2xl> i looked in the code of my program, and i found out that i forgot to output the value :(.

You might be right about that, Joe.

Most harddrives wouldn't function after being on straight that long. :)

Btw, its on BNET so it's totally bull shit, which makes it fit in this forum, GG.
And like a fool I believed myself, and thought I was somebody else...

If he's running a P2, then he should be on an OS modern enough (if you consider Windows modern..) to support hard-drive sleeping. It probably stopped around 5 minutes in, asuming he actually did it (which I doubt).

Also, that could be from IRC. A version of X-Chat I once used put those kind of brackets around the names.

The validity of that hypothesis depends on too many things.  I'd much sooner assume it's false.

Secondly, there's no way this is true.  If some idiot wanted to waste a perfectly good laptop for that many years calculating pi to the one billionth digit, then I wish he would perish.  I'm pretty sure pi was already published to the billionth digit, even in 1998.

Lastly, he never said he was using Windows...

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

Sidoh

Since there are 1011 milliseconds in a year, there is more reason to believe this is a load of bullshit.  That means it's taking 100 ms per digit calculation, which is highly unlikely.

It's from IRC and relatively old. :P

1998 + 7 = 2005

That's not that old. :\

Man, if you weren't all programming geeks you'd think it was funny. =p

I said relatively!

It's not even relatively old.  What are we relating it to?  Other things posted in this forum?  I could probably find a bunch of posted dated before 2005.

It doesn't take a programmer to have common sense. ;)

Though we (hey, I made a hello world app!) generally have more common sense then your run of the mill idiot. :D
