UPI: Ex-Marine Says Public Version of Saddam Capture Fiction

A former U.S. Marine who participated in capturing ousted
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein said the public version of
his capture was a fabricated fake and the former dictator
did in fact fight his captors bravely.

Ex-Sgt. Nadim Abou Rabeh, of Lebanese descent, was quoted in
the Saudi daily newspaper al-Medina Wednesday as saying
Saddam was actually captured Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, and not
the day after, as announced by the U.S. Army.

"I was among the 20-man unit, including eight of Arab
descent, who searched for Saddam for three days in the area
of Dour near Tikrit, and we found him in a modest home in a
small village and not in a hole as announced," Abou Rabeh said.

"We captured him after fierce resistance during which a
Marine of Sudanese origin was killed," he said. He said
Saddam himself fired some 20 shots at them with a gun from
the window of a room on the second floor. Then they shouted
at him in Arabic: "You have to surrender. ... There is no
point in resisting." Finally the squad broke into the house
and knocked Saddam off with the butt of their rifles and
drugged him with a syringe.

"Later on, a U.S. military production team fabricated the
film of Saddam's capture in a hole, which was in fact a
deserted well or a masoned spring" Abou Rabeh said.

Abou Rabeh was interviewed in Lebanon.

My opinion: The USA is stupid. Why do this faking just to
pain Saddam as a coward hiding in a hole. If you fake the
Saddam video, people will start to ask if the 9/11 Pentagon
impact video is also faked, etc. If you start lying once you
can never stop and finally the heap of lies falls apart and
the rubble buries you.

Too bad that story makes no sense what so ever. Why would Saddam suddenly stop shooting and surrender peacefully even after the Marines hit him with their rifles? Also, people in the military aren't cops. Taking people alive isn't part of their training, they shoot to kill if fired upon.

It matters a lot.  If he tried to fight, he might be seen more as a hero than the current story, where he looks like a quitter.  One of the mail fronts of war is propoganda -- you have to convince your citizens that the other side are the evil ones by any means necessary:

"We don't know anything about their race, history, or culture, but one thing's for sure. They stand for everything we stand against."

If he tried to fight and lost to a bunch of "White Devils" it would have looked just as bad.  Now, if he had suicide-bombed everything in the fight, that'd be different, but he didn't: he was a pussy and got captured.
