So ubuntu is on
« on: March 29, 2008, 05:53:55 pm »
The panels won't expand to fit the full screen, odd.  Thoughts off hand?  I'm going to play with it a bit more once I (maybe) get this environment installed

Right click on the panel, go to properties and make sure the "Expand" box is checked.

It is.  I figure I'll attempt to find the correct drivers for my Gateway instead of using the generic settings

I'd be really surprised if it was a driver issue.  There's probably just something wrong with gnome's settings.

Oh so frustrated.

Cant find the roblem with the resolution, cant seem to get compiz-fusion to actually work, sigh (everytime I click custom under the compiz appearance preferences I get "Desktop effects could not e enabled)

typing compiz in the terminal shows "blacklisted pciid", I assume my graphics (integrated intel shit on my laptop) are blacklisted?
Google suggests: "XV does not play with XAA under compiz, only with EXA"

What video card is it?

I had trouble getting the resolution properly set on one of my laptops with Ubuntu as well.  I think I had to manually change some stuff in xorg.conf.

I googled stuff that pointed me to xorg.conf, I didnt find anything similar (it was stuff about a TV setting).

And now my awesome Windows disk wont boot so I can go back to Vista.  Sigh.  Maybe I'll just shoot it.

Off to check out this xorg shit again

xorg.conf is the settings file for X, which is the window system you're using.  There are all kinds of settings in xorg.conf, but among them are resolution, which display drivers to use, etc.  It's located in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.  I believe each user can have their own xorg.conf in their home directory, but since ubuntu uses gdm, I'm not sure it's loaded.  I'd just edit the one in /etc/X11, but make sure you back the working one up.

After updating ubuntu (204 files) it won't load an image anymore, yay ::).  Its all command prompt.  Time to reinstall

No....image?  Take care with words in Linux!  Image often means the kernel image.  If you mean you can't get X running, restore your backed-up (back-upped?) copy of the xorg.conf file.

Yeah, what rabbit said is very true.  The proper phrase you're looking for is "gdm didn't start".  Reinstalling is probably the best option in this case since it's probably less painful than troubleshooting, but if you had stuff on there, checking log files is probably what you'd want to do.

Whenever you change something major in a conf file, it's a good idea to make a backup of the original in case you mess anything up.

You should still get a 'login prompt' if gdm doesn't start.  Login, and do $ sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Heh, I killed/reloaded Slackware probably 5 - 10 times in the first 2 months I was using it. One of the best ways to learn, in my opinion, is to break/re-install it. Each time you do it, you get better.

Bender: Helmut Spargle has a message for you. He says (hoarse) "Ooh, I'm dead!"
Elzar: Spargle, huh? What he do, bland himself to death?
Bender: No. He was eating some food I made and by a crazy coincidence his stomach exploded. Now I'm here to avenge him.

You said that your computer just happened to keep getting fried when you used Red Hat.

Bender said that the guy's stomach just happened to explode while he was eating the food.

Coincidences?

No, it should be evident from the quote. In fact, just from this line (I gave the other two for a little context):

Bender: No. He was eating some food I made and by a crazy coincidence his stomach exploded.

It's making fun of the fact that your computer "kept getting fried" when you installed Red Hat. What a "crazy coincidence"!

That's because Ubuntu comes with all kinds of extra crap.  What you should do is download ndiswrapper and the Windows drivers you need and burn them to a CD, and then you can install those on Fedora and all should be well with the world.

resolution solution
/me chuckles

Solving problems you have (and you'll have a LOT since you're still new to Linux) will be a lot easier if you setup a shared partition.  NTFS works fine now (if you use ntfs-3g driver, not the default ntfs one), especially with Vista.  FAT32 will work fine too, as long as you don't try to store large files.

Yeah, I need to go back and create one :-\.

Solution for RESOLUTION ISSUE: (hopefully I can find that via a search here, if I need it again)
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3473521&postcount=3
Quote
Modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf so that a new monitor is added for
the tv-out, marked as disabled. Specify on the device section
the name of the dummy tv-out.

add:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "TVOutput"
Option "Disable" "true"
EndSection

find Section "Device" and add:

Option "monitor-TV" "TVOutput"

Now to fix the sound.

p.s. I love how these threads become a lovely log of my progress.

The 'bulk' isn't really as negative as you're making it seem.  It sure does come with things you'll probably never use, but it works out of the box more often than any distro of Linux I've ever used.

For the record, I've used Fedora 8 on my machine as well.  It doesn't run any faster. :)

I don't think I'd like to use Ubuntu as a server OS, but it kicks ass for a desktop OS.  It's extremely well managed and I've been impressed time after time with how well it works with my hardware.

Crazed, as for the sound, I think the best way to find a solution for it is to find the name of your hardware, type it into Google and hack "Ubuntu" on the end.  You should get plenty of helpful results.

Sound fix for gateway laptop with ubuntu
« Reply #33 on: March 30, 2008, 12:19:28 pm »
Yup, installing an alsa driver now.  Hope that works.

Edit: It works, sorta

Code: [Select]
1) sudo aptitude install build-essential
2) mkdir alsa
3) cd alsa
4) sudo wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.15.tar.bz2
5) tar xvjf alsa-driver-1.0.15.tar.bz2
6) cd alsa-driver-1.0.15
7) sudo ./configure
sudo make
9) sudo make install
10) sudo reboot now
11) unmute all channels in mixer and sound work
Get the most recent driver from the alsa page, the current driver is 1.0.16.
Unfortunately, this doesn't allow the speakers to work as they normally would, they're WAY too quiet :(.

Generally, a blacklisted driver is one that's listed in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist (or something similar). But from the context, I'm guessing it's something else?

So I have all of the alsa related packages installed (via package manager) yet it doesn't run (I assume as I have no sound) when I restart.  Start up script?

Modprobe alsa is not working, either.  "module not found"

Whatever I guess.

Have you tried enabling compiz through the "Appearance" settings?

Settings => Preferences => Appearance => Visual Effects

I think anything above "None" makes compiz the default WM.

I've grown to hate Pidgin lately. It seems that after a few days of uptime it slows down to the point of being unusable, I'm guessing it has one hell of a memory leak and/or just hates me.

heh, I'm the same as iago.  Mine's been running for a couple of weeks with no problems.

Yep, it's even called that.  When you click on the power button, it should be an option.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

Why not? It's the same thing as turning your computer off, except it starts up faster. Only problem I've ever had with it is for some reason randomly the computer will turn itself back on. That was on my old computer, though. Do you have a reason why you don't use it?

I don't use hibernate because my Laptop's ACPI thingy is flaky, which makes it really hard to get it going again.

"failed to hibernate"  Guess I need to go read the help file like it suggested, oh well, I'll do that sometime tomorrow.  Intense test tomorrow, NOT looking forward to it.

Anyone run into a screen brightness issue?  I can't adjust the brightness or find much of a solution.

Add the brightness applet to the panel?  Turn down your monitor's brightness

Ignore it and install the drivers anyway.  That's what I did on my laptop.
