Toshiba Satellite Wireless Linux
« on: June 16, 2008, 05:38:45 pm »
I'm looking for a distro of linux, that has support for Toshiba Satellite A205-S5851's wireless card built in. Or a quick way to install the drivers. [my live cd of ubuntu didn't like it :X]
I need to setup dual/tri boot on my laptop. For testing shit. [Vista, Linux, XP, and possibly a ver of mac]
And I need to be able to share files. [mainly music and code :P] I did this like 3 years ago. but I forget and I used Ubuntu which dosent have my drivers built in.

According to a quick google search, that should work with most Linuxes (Linuces?) out of the box. If you can give details on what type of wireless card is in it (I didn't get that info, although I didn't look hard) I could probably give you more info.

I've never personally used ndiswrapper, but I've managed to get various cards to work. I'd use ndiswrapper as a last resort.

I've used ndiswrapper before, and it works well enough.  There aren't the bells and whistles, like networks, strengths, etc..., but it worked pretty well.

I have a Atheros AR5007EG
And I have no experience [that i can remember] of doing wireless in ubuntu so having a clean interface would be good.
Ima install the latest ubuntu and get all the data sharing together. And see if I can get wireless working after that.

Ubuntu might support it with "restricted" drivers.

Atheros-based hardware is among the best supported in the open source community (contrary to what wikipedia might say).  Also, Atheros-based hardware is often superior to others (Intel Pro Wireless, Ralink, Broadcom, Texas Instruments, etc...).  I'd be surprised if your satellite card didn't attach out of the box.
An adorable giant isopod!

If you can wire your laptop up to the net with Live Ubuntu, I'd run an "update" in Synaptic and snoop restricted drivers. I'm sure not EVERY wireless driver ships on the Live CD.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

If you can wire your laptop up to the net with Live Ubuntu, I'd run an "update" in Synaptic and snoop restricted drivers. I'm sure not EVERY wireless driver ships on the Live CD.

As an aside, Linux drivers, unlike Windows drivers, are not really branded; that is to say, they are identified by the chip on the card, not the manufacturer id and model number. There are, therefore, substantially fewer drivers to sort through, and there's a much higher likelihood of drivers existing on any given Linux distro's install disc than there is for Windows.

If you want to get in to technical details, the driver is associated with a set of mf/device ids (rather than a single pair), so it's possible to have some obscurely manufactured hardware for which a driver exists, but is unusable. An example of this would be the wireless card that Macs got in the first hardware revision of the intel era; there was a patch you had to download and apply to the kernel module sources to add the device id to the map. That patch has since then been merged in to the official sources.

So, the lesson to take away from this is that it's almost always possible to get around ndiswrapper, and you're usually better off doing so if you can.

Just an update. I've done a few diffrent things trying to get my wireless to work and got nothing. I'll keep trying but its not to big of a deal. Whenever I'm on ubuntu its solely for testing code. and 95% of the time I will have a wired connection if i have a wireless. My wireless works fine on my vista side so its no big deal.
* HdxBmx27 jsut needs to reconfigure grub to use vista as default.
