New stuffs
« on: February 09, 2010, 09:14:46 pm »
First, iago's server is a psychopath.

Second, I got a job tutoring at school. My life just went from eat, sleep, homework and school to eat, tutor, homework and school.

Third, I've started playing WarCraft III on Battle.net extremely casually. I joined Clan BoT (Bitches of Thunder) on Azeroth. /f a joe[x86].

Fourth, I forgot what's fourth.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

Ugh.  Tutoring is painful.  I've been doing private tutoring since last semester.  It pays well, but jesus it's frustrating.

oh well.  it's work, right? :)

$8.95 / hour to sit in the computer lab and answer peoples quick questions 17 hours a week. I was convinced by the lab director (the referee type guy) considering that's all I do anyhow.

I guess it depends on the type of classes you're tutoring for.  The lab monitors in the CS lab here get caught up in hour-long questions fairly regularly, and they're recognized by the students, so even when they're not on duty, they're attacked by rabid stupids.

The private tutoring thing is a pretty good deal.  I charge $30-$40/hr.  My students are typically foreign students who are sponsored by groups who are more than willing to shell out some cash for a private tutor.  My friend does the same thing, but he was a lot more available last semester, so got a lot more students.  He's tutoring 10-15 hours a week making $40/hr.  Fucking bank.

Anyway, good luck with all of that.  Patience is a virtue, and in my experience, tutoring does its damnedest to prove to you that you don't have it.

I'd feel like a dick to charge $30 / hr to help people, especially students paying their own way through school. The reason they went to a tech college over UW-Madison was probably because they can't afford it anyhow. :(.

But I'm anticipating the being attacked by people wherever I go, which is really fine because 80% of my time on campus but outside of class is free time anyhow. I really like the level of professionalism that they offer so far though -- if I need to talk to a teacher about school business, it's on the clock. If I need a book to review something so I can tutor better, the school pays for it. Of course, it's owned by the IT lab and not me, but that's basically my "home" on campus, so that's cool with me. :)

I do sometimes feel like a dick, but hey, if they're willing to pay, I'm not going to complain. :)

My friend has started telling people that the last year of his undergraduate education was funded by Saudi oil. haha.

I feel like a dick charging anybody for help, especially if I am knowledgeable in the subject. I feel like it's my duty as a good person to share my knowledge with the world. I'm mentally ill, I guess.

I do accept beer and food as payment, though. I figure as long as it's not money I don't worry about it -- they've spent their money, who cares what they do with it after that? :P

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

I'm getting paid by the school to be a tutor, not by the.. tutees? Tooties? Tootlets? I don't know. They also have me on a freelance list so that if people email me I can charge them, but I won't. I'll refer them to my schedule and ask them to meet me on the school's pay.

I'm generally happy to help out people if they have a quick question, but if they're hopelessly lost and need hours of help to succeed, I'm not going to do it for free -- especially when I know I can make as much as I do.  I don't feel the slightest bit guilty; most of these students are people who have oil barons for parents.

My typical student doesn't know anything about programming, and all of the details escape them during lecture.  It's not pleasant for me, but at least I'm getting paid pretty well.

Yep, that seems like the honorable way to do it.  You're getting paid, but you're not taking the students' money.

The advantages of private tutoring are significant and obvious, though: you can choose who, what, when, and where you want to tutor, and you can charge an absurd amount.

I think the demand for costly private tutoring is less amongst typical college students, but at a university with a pretty large international population, it's high.  Like I said, most of the hits I got were international students, and all of them except one were students with sponsors or trust funds.

I'd say that in those circumstances it's also "You're getting paid, but you're not taking the students' money." You're getting back all the money you spent on gas in 2008. :)

I think cadet is the rank of someone in Towelie's position at the USAFA.  I think I've heard ROTC people called cadets too.

I'll guess none (or few) in the short term, simply because of the stigma.

Same here.  I'd imagine there are a few closet cases, but I think even the majority of the ones who are sure they're gay aren't comfortable exiting the closet while they're in a military setting (in the US, anyway...haha).
