What do you do on the computer for fun?
« on: April 14, 2010, 12:32:41 am »
Just as the topic title implies. Gone are the days that we all sit around and backstab people in SC, or play videogames in general. As most of us get older, I can only imagine computer time has gone down. For those that still spend a lot of time on the computer: what do you do for fun? Which websites do you visit frequently?

I'll start:
I go to about 8-9 different Webcomics, have an RSS feed for a couple different websites, and am always on iGoogle to see if a new Slashdot/Engadget/Techdirt story catches my eye. I also check x86 but the lack of activity usually means there's never anything here. Beyond that, I find myself at a loss for what to do on a computer for fun. I've been meaning to install Linux so that I can get back into a more comfortable programming environment, but I've heard Linux isn't a great laptop OS in terms of battery consumption/energy efficiency, and I don't want to deal with reinstalling Windows anyway. I casually play video games, and watch some downloaded TV shows/movies.

Facebook, Google Reader, e-mail, video chat, youtube, working on personal projects, hulu... the list goes on porn.  I guess those are the ones that I'd attribute most of my "fun times" to, though.

I read about a dozen different "fun" RSS feeds (webcomics + some cheezburger sites). And about 500 different security/IT feeds (give or take). I also use Twitter (twitter.com/iagox86) to follow a lot of different security folks.

Besides some little games (I just recently beat I Wanna Be The Guy), I spend a lot of time working on hacking tools (I'm a core developer for Nmap and I've been working a lot on Metasploit, plus I do some of my own stuff like nbtool and dnscat). I also maintain my blog on skullsecurity.org, which gets a decent amount of recognition lately.

So yeah, I spend a lot of time on the computer.

i see two problems with this.

1) Your list contains a lot of things that aren't porn.
2) Your list doesn't have porn on it

me thinks you're a LIAR!

facebook, gmail, skype, reading the news, AIM, listening to music, personal programming projects, comp sci homework, english homework, reading up on MLB standings/statistics, MLB gamecasts, TV shows, online chess, ...

There are sooo many things to do on a computer for fun. And there are a lot more fun things to do on a computer than reading forums and playing video games >_>

Maybe I'm just missing something, but I don't really see the appeal in Facebook.. Everyone I "keep in contact with" through Facebook I already talk to regularly. To me it's just more something I check once a day or so to see if I got invited to some random events or what have you. Care to fill me in?

Not true for me.  Most of the people I'm in touch with over facebook I don't see every year, let alone every day.

Regardless, it's a forum for discussion and interesting conversation.  That's rarely what it amounts to, but that's why I'm there if I am.

I have a programming folder, and I have nothing of value there

Running with Code has a new home!

Our species really annoys me.

Facebook. x86. Listen to music. Do homework. Download movies and music. Really, that's about it. I don't do those all that much, either. I'm really social now. And that's sad, because my social life is pathetic by most standards. I had no social life back in high school in comparison.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

Joe has joined the group "If 1,000,000 people join this group there will be 1,000,000 in this group."
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.
