« on: December 30, 2005, 05:18:52 am »
well - im not really new here - but i think im finally becoming active. well - im real life friends with newby - and uh - im into cars (mostly old and custom stuff - not chinky stuff i.e. civics or wop stuff i.e. ferarri) - i play guitar, and im getting to be decent - i like welding and making stuff and im currently working on a car with my dad - in music im pretty varied - but generally stick to anything with a good guitar. http://www.last.fm/user/Danx86/ should give you an idea of musics. ive made a bit of art in the past - i like to screw around with fractal programs and such. religon - uh - pretty much athiest - buddhist if anything (the philosophy behind it, anyway.) politically i dont like the views of most americans (republican or democrat) because i think political parties are the lazy way out. for example, lets say bush had a kid and named him john bush - he would be sponsored by republicans no matter what his views are - he could have 100% democratic views, and get 90% of the republican vote (and 10% of the democratic vote). i just think the whole party system is screwed, but eh, what can i do?

A belated welcome from x86 to you, leet muffin!

I'd venture to say you're probably more agnostic than athiest; I would hope so, anyway.  I think athiesm is about the same as blind faith. :)

Incidentally, you should totally answer iago's questionaire!

Well, our group resides around a tree, usually forming multiple groups on both sides of the tree, i basically swap groups the majority of lunch to avoid OZ (other zach) and his overall, to say it bluntly, dumb comments.

The people in the group itself we generally prefer to refer to as tree-tards.

That, as I wish people would understand, is an elaborate joke.  Click on the link and look at the site it takes you too.  I'm generally appalled by how many people actually believe that.  I use Firefox too, but I don't have much of a problem with IE; I'm definitely going to give IE7 a try when I get the chance.

I realize its been a while since anyone posted on this thread, but I think I should respond to Sidohs request for responding to iagos questionare here, rather than in a new thread. Here it goes.

How old are you? 15. 16 on Sept. 21st.

Where are you from? El Cajon, CA (nearest to San Diego.)

What do you do (school/work)? Valhalla High School - Junior. Also work on cars. (mostly as a hobby, but it makes me money, too.)

Where do you work, if applicable? I work on the cars in my garage.

What kind of music do you like? Mostly thrash metal. Also several other metal sub-genres.

Do you have a girlfriend? No.

Are you in any other clans? Guild Wars clan: Reaping Scythe.

What are they like (if applicable)? Rather strict, but still a good time. Usually up for a quest or two at any time.

Any friends around here (members or otherwise)? Newby, Towlie, Fo0ol, Hagen in RL. I chat occasionally with Deadly and iago, but I consider 99% of people here to be my friends.

Why do you want to join? I feel the forums to be an appropriate place to have some fun, have some intellectual conversation, discuss the dealings of everyday life, and mix the three. I just like being here. =)

Have you read our rules? The ones that apply to my posting, yes. ex: I haven't read the rules in *given programming forum*, because I doubt I will post there any time soon, and if there comes a point at which I will, I'll read the rules first.

What's your favourite tv show? I rarely watch TV, The Colbert Report isn't bad. Pinks is a horrible show. I was immensly dissapointed.

Movie? Hmm. Office Space is great. I liked Kill Bill 1. I really can't think of any more movies. At all. Oh, Syriana, that sucked.

Band? If someone were to mix various members of Nuclear Assault, Pantera, Exodus, and Iced Earth, I'd be a die-hard fanboy.

Country? Hmm, I really can't think of a favorite country. I like alot of Russian culture/products, and dislike American ignorance/stupidity/myspace/arrogance. Maybe I'll choose something midway between the two. Pacific or Atlantic ocean! ~prepost edit~ After answering the next question, I realized: Australia!

Continent? Africa is uh... poor and corrupt. Out! North America contains Mexico and a majority of myspace users. Out! South America only really exists during the World Cup that get's ignored by me. Out! Europe has too many small pointless countries. Out! Asia is home to Israel and all the countries fighting Israel (by the way, no anti-semetic meaning there, I fully support Israel in their war effort.) Out! Antarctica is melting. I have no use for a melting continent. Out! Australia... is home to kangeroo's, many drunkards, drag racing, shrimp on the barbie, and among my favorite beers. Yes!

Season? Non-nuclear Winter.

Type of weather? Cool, dry, basically, central Oregan.

Subject in school? Math. Followed by Engineering.

Chemical? Is acetyline a chemical? I haven't taken chemistry yet.

Food? Lately, I've had a huge obsession with Philly cheese steak sandwiches. I'm sure it'll change soon.

Drink? Water. Energy drink? Monster. Alcoholic drink? Vodka. Type of vodka? Weird, cheap Russian stuff (even though it's cheap, it tastes great.(Yes, I enjoy the taste of vodka.))

Book? Night by Elie Wiesel, what a hoot, hilarious. Real favorite book? Perhaps Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Maybe Firestarter by Stephen King.

Author? I don't think I read enough to have a valid opinion, but maybe Stephen King.

Operating system? Currently running Windoze XP, planning on a dual boot with Slackware.

Phone company? House phone: Cox (also ISP)

Computer brand? It's a Compaq box, but I've made 6-7 modifications.

Linux distribution? Slackware.

Sport? I can play most sports that require use of one arm to throw something, and can't do much of anything else in the sport. (Ex: I made a pretty good pitcher (threw a few no-hitters), but couldn't hit at all. I currently don't play any sports. Unless you count deep-sea fishing, which is quite a blast.

Sports team? N/A.

Sporting event? Drag races are fun.

Game? Guild Wars; Dungeon's and Dragons (formerly with Newby and Fo0ol. I was the only other dedicated one besides them.

Style of game (board, rpg, card, etc.)? D&D style table top games. RPG. I think someone should make attempt creation of a low-lag MMOFPS. I think it'd be fun.

Bird? Penguin. Pelicans are cool, too. As are ducks.

Pet? Cat.

Where do you work, if applicable? I work on the cars in my garage.

I used to help my dad work on cars in the garage, too... But that's when I was really little and was still allowed to swing on the crane. ^^ I wish it's something I would have stuck with, though. I wish I knew more about cars.

I know a bit. Im no mechanic (being that this is the first car Ive ever worked on.), but feel free to ask questions or just name a topic you wanna' know more about. Cars are alot of fun, and I'd love to give some knowledge =)
I just spent about an hour taking the tranny off the engine to put the torque converter in. Jesus Christ. It was bad. (The torque converter is this 30lb thing that goes between engine and tranny, it bolts onto a spinning part of the engine (flywheel) and hooks onto the transmission. It's point is to take the spinning power (torque) from the engine to the transmission.)

Cars are evil only because I make them to be. I'm scared to death of driving for no perfectly good reason. Maybe if I was more familiar with how they worked I wouldn't be so freaked out, but... My parents refuse to drive with me. Haha.

I don't mind driving, but when it comes to working on them (other than maybe doing things like puting in washer fluid and checking the oil -- even those are risky), I'm hopeless.

I have little interest in the mechanics of an internal combustion engine in a practical sense (I enjoy learning the Physics behind them, but I would not enjoy maintenance on the various parts); I highly suspect it will remain that way.

Haha. You probably shouldn't. I'll get lost right after "The ..."

Yeah... See, right after I got my permit after driving a lot in drivers ed, my mom had no time to drive with me. For six months. (Bizarre? Ya rly.) Finally, one day she throws me the keys, and forces me to drive. I hadn't driven in months, I'd never driven a van, and never driven with her in the car. Needless to say, she kept freaking out, trying to grab the steering wheel, yelling, telling me what to do, I got *very* angry, and ended up running into another car.

That might explain why I hate driving so much.

I can tell you that right now I wouldn't dare drive anything other than a moped or a car for fear of sending the world into nuclear winter, without even using nukes.

EDIT -
With the exception of the STFU truck. I drive that all the time.

Yeah, I know, Night is a real book, but its not my real favorite. =) Its like when someone says something about Schindlers List, I usually respond something along the lines of "Yeah, great movie; truly quality comedy." I think its because I talk to Newby entirely too much.

I really do want a true Philly cheese steak sandwich.

Kaleeko: Dont worry about that; its near impossible to drive correctly while someones yelling at you. Especially in a type of vehicle youve never driven before. I had never driven a car before (only a truck), and my driving instructor was actually yelling at me about the slightest little thing, which made me screw up more, which made him yell more.... Neverending cycle. Finally I pulled over and told him that he needed to stop yelling because it was making me worse, and threatened to go to another instructor company. He shut up and I drove well.

So true. Except in my case, it doesn't. Some kid wanted me to take his shift, I was hesistant because I'd rather do nothing. He offered me $35 and nothing changed. Eventually I decided since that I was gonna be sitting at home doing nothing which would get old anyway, I'd take it. The $35 just made the deal sweeter.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

If you think it's a sandwich, you've never had a real cheesesteak.

No.  Not nearly enough beef, and please tell me those chunks aren't cheese.

NO!  It should come in a nice Italian or Greek softbread (preferably sourdough) roll.

A roll is not bread.  A roll is a roll.

This = bread

Anyway, an example of a fake Philly Cheesesteak:

And this is about as close to a real cheesesteak as you can get without actually coming here:

It made me hungry. Is that wrong? I can imagine how it tastes from looking at it, so eh. =)

I consider a roll to be bread. Yes, the "fake" Philly cheesesteaks are on a roll. And look kinda like a combination of the 2 pictures.

Difference being?

I mean, its the same (or similar) meat, sane style of cheese, onions, bread, just better prepared with more grease. Is it the grease?

Greese is part of it, but not wholly.  The following is the best way to make a cheesesteak:

Requirements, in no particular order:
1. A pan big enough to fit the whole cheesesteak lengthwise.
2. Crisco.
3. Sliced Onions (optional).
4. A slab of beef (sliced lunch beef and ground beef are unacceptable, this must be a slab of compressed ground beef.  If you try to use a steak of any kind I will castrate you).
5. Cheese.
6. A real bun, sourdough is good, but as long as it's soft it should be fine.
7. Lemon pepper (optional but it's awesome).
8. Metal spatula

Steps, in a very particular order:
0. Slap a big hunk of lard (Crisco is fine) on the pan.  Let it cook down a little, then use your spatula to put the chunk back.  Spread the lard around the pan, giving a nice coating.  Scrape any excess into a corner somewhere.
1. Dump the beef on the pan.  Doesn't matter how, really, as long as it all gets cooked.
2. Put the onions on about 45 seconds after the beef, but do not mix them in!!!!  Put them aside, in their own little pile.
3. Let it all cook.
4. About 2 minutes before the beef is done, sprinkle some Lemon pepper over top of the beef.
5. About a minute before it's all done cooking, spread the beef out into a line, the length of the roll.
6. Lay a few slices of cheese (I prefer American, but Swiss works) right on top of the beef.
7. Take the roll and slice it LENGTHWISE down the middle, but not all the way through (kind of like a hotdog bun).  You can do it on the top or side (side is better).
8. Open the roll, and put it right on top of the cheesey beef.
9. Slide the spatula under the beef, forcing it into the roll, and flip the whole thing over into your hand (not back onto the pan).
10. Take the onions and sprinkle them across the top of the beef.
11. Slice (...unlengthwise) all the way through the middle (perpendicular to the first cut), so that you now have 2 halves.
12. Add salt, pepper (just regular pepper), and ketchup.  Anything else is heresy.
13. Eat.

Sounds like a pretty basic Philly cheese steak.

From my own personal studies, Ive found that even a slight improvement in the meat adds like +5 in taste.

I'll think I'll try this tonight!  What specifically do you recommend for the type of meat (a slab of compressed ground beef isn't very specific).

Go to a butcher and get fresh ground beef, from 1 cow, and ask if he can make a rectangular patty about 7 inches long, and 4 inches high, about a quarter inch thick, as tightly packed as possible.  He might not do it, but eh.  Anyway, freeze it for about an hour, then fridge it for at least 30 minutes.  If you can't get that specific a slab, ask for about 3/4lb of ground beef patty (only 1).
