"Boycott Da Vinci Code film": top Vatican official
« on: April 29, 2006, 03:29:13 am »
ROME (Reuters) - The
Vatican stepped up its offensive against "The Da Vinci Code" on Friday when a top official close to
Pope Benedict blasted the book as full of anti-Christian lies and urged Catholics to boycott the film.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060428/en_nm/vatican_davinci_dc

Personally I cant wait to see what the big fuss is about -- is the Vatican worried about losing thier empire over a movie? I can't wait to not boycott the movie and see why they're crying.

They're complaining about it for the same reason any organization complains about something that provides direct controversy to their beliefs, morals or laws.  The Da Vinci Code does contain quite a few of these said contradictions.  Personally, I don't really blame them...

Hm.  The History Channel did a spiel about the Da Vinci code.  It didn't pan out at all.

Everyone in the world complains too much.  "You're going against what I believe in! Rather than accept that and DEAL with the fact that not everything in the world revolves around what I [dis]like, I'm going to start something and convince others of my moronic ways!"

I'm not at all surprised.  A lot of the book greatly undermines Catholic ideals.  If it's true, then the Church spent 2000 years hiding the fact that Jesus had a wife and that a great deal of what they said about his life is wrong.  Of course they're going to be upset at a movie if it reveals their secret.  And if it's false, then they'll hate it for the same reason, except that the book makes it look that way when it isn't.

in either case, the fuss is totally understandable.

The media surrounding the book (or movie, whatever) doesn't really make any difference in the believability.  The Church would deny it whether or not it is real, and hollywood would promote it whether or not it's real.

On a side note, in the book Holy Blood, Holy Cross some of the same things are discussed, such as Jesus having never died on the cross, and Jesus getting married and his bloodline continuing until today. Either that or I'm totally misinformed and the DaVinci Code has nothing to do with those.

I'd personally do as Joe suggests

As far as I know, they're based on the same theories.  I seem to remember one of them trying to sue the other, or something..

The author(s) of HBHG tried to sue Dan Brown.  They failed.

The sad thing is the lack of education about it.  DVC was a novel (i.e., long and fiction), and the author refuses to divulge where he got his information.  And yet people act as if it's God's word.

Oh wait, if they thought it was God's word, they'd jump to something else really quickly.  :P

Unfortunately, there are an abundance of idiots who actually adopt the contents of the book as fact. :(

The ideas are very convincing, and it's the kind of thing the Church WOULD do.  There's no strong evidence either way, except for the text in the bible, but that's like using an eyewitness account as proof.

It's much, much different.  The bible was written thousands of years ago by people who personally interacted with Jesus Christ.

The Da Vinci Code was written by Dan Brown--a modern day author.

I could understand warning about the movie, but suggesting a boycott?  Hardly the right approach.  How can you defend your religion if you don't know how it is being attacked.  Hell...that's what I though Apologetics was all about. Meh.  Crazy kids and their movies.

Quote from: Mark Hyman "The Point" newscentral.tv
"A paris murder and clues hidden in paintings by leonardo da vinci lead to the discovery of a 2000 religious mystery protected by a powerful group of christians. Revealing the secret could shake the entire foundation of the christian faith.  That is the plot of author Dan Brown's book. More than 40 Million copies have been sold since it's 2003 release. A movie by the same name will open later this month. Some christians are upset over the book and the film. They label them blasphemes. I read the book a couple of years ago. I though it was terrific entertainment. Nothing more nothing less. I found it in the fiction section of the bookstore. I doubt any library labels it as a reference book. Nothing in the book caused me to question my own religious beliefs. Anymore then science fiction books make me believe in parallel universes, or a middle earth inpopulated with sorcerers and trolls. I'm sure everyone will survive the da vinci code movie just fine. And that's the point."

x86 Member: Blah blah(Saying he's foolish/ignorant/completely misinformed)

You're just upset he made fun of your DDR routine. :P I kid, I kid.

On a side note, I don't try to personally insult people, but if I do, don't take it personally.  It's just me being a smartass.

Hrmmm... I have to wonder if my theater will get this movie, though.  My town is hardcore Mormon and Catholic, so I'm really not sure.
errr... something like that...

It's a damn movie, a fictional peice. Screw the vatican, I'd shoot the pope.
One must ask oneself: "do I will trolling to become a universal law?" And then when one realizes "yes, I do will it to be such," one feels completely justified.

You should read the book.  You'll soon realize why it upsets the church so much.  Fiction or not, the ideas it proposes are very plausible, logical and believable.

I wanted to read the book, but our library didn't have a copy in. :(

I had to settle for Red Dragon and Dark Force Rising.

Hehe.  Holy Blood, Holy Grail obviously talks about the same thing.

The most logical of the proofs for the fundemental hypothesis behind these books (that the "Holy Grail" is actually a bloodline decending from Christ) is a misprint from one of the scribes that translated the bible.  It was written in French.  He seperated the words differently, which changed the meaning of the phrase "Holy Grail" into "Holy Blood," or something like that.  I watched a 3 hour show on it yesterday because I was sick and didn't feel like doing anything else.

True I should, I heard part of it during a car trip and it was really interesting. However for the church to boycott something that's (not sure about this) probably stated as fiction seems to be stupid. Perhaps they should display a message

Due to the idiocy of the vatican, this film is fiction

Also: It's annoying seeing all those "Davici decoded, beyond the davinci code, blahblah" jeez

Haha.  I only caught about an hour of it before I fell asleep due to fatigue and boredom.
