Downtime, at some point
« on: June 26, 2006, 11:04:22 pm »
At some point (likely on the weekend, but maybe earlier, maybe later) I'm going to have a little downtime.  If all goes smoothly, it'll be brief.

The reason is that I bought a new computer and I plan to migrate everything to it.

I plan to retire darkside and Pie.  They've served me well, but I'd rather have it all on the same system.  The new computer will be named either "Vimes" or "Vetinari", and will basically just run VMWare.  I'm going to have several VMWare instances for different uses.  I'll have one specifically for web, another specifically for database, and one for test.  I'm also considering giving an individual instance to friends, for them to play with.

I'm really looking forward to this change, it'll be nice to consolidate everything.

And incidentally, I've decided to go with a naming theme: Pratchett.  :)

Interested in selling either darkside or Pie, or perhaps even both?
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

400MHz processor, 40gig HD. 256?MB RAM.

I think they're rather close together in specs.

If he's going to run VMWare, I expect it to far surpass the old ones. =p

I'd prefer to keep the parts from the old ones.

And the new one:
Intel P4 thingy, 3.2ghz
1gb ram (I'm going to grab another 1gb today)
250gb harddrive
Onboard video/sound

I bought a cheap case, so it's pretty ugly, but I'll take a picture anyways.

Since running a webserver takes no cpu/ram, the bottleneck is the Interweb connection speed.  Since that's not changing, no, there won't be a speed improvement.

No, but running MySQL Queries all day takes CPU usage.

Not enough to matter with a website this size...

Yeah, it's not a significant amount.

On a sidenote, I was also looking at commercial packages from my ISP, which would allow me to do static ip, email, proper DNS, and other stuff.  I don't want to commit to anything yet, but it looks promising.

Cool!  Also, I noticed my router had an interface to automatically update DynDNS with an IP address.  It's a linksys router.  Just thought I'd throw that out there too. :)

My wireless router does that, but it's internal.  The internet-facing router is a crappy one I got for free.

Some day I might figure out how to do a PPPoE connection in Linux and put my box straight into the modem, then I can update DynDNS no problem.

Well, I'd likely get it in addition to my current internet, I wouldn't want my family on the same static ip.  I'd probably be looking somewhere between $40 and $100/month.

Mostly because I didn't feel like looking up the actual costs, which this link might get you to:
http://www.mts.ca/portal/site/mts/menuitem.a275cbc6dbb0d4e50e14081031248a0c/?vgnextoid=dce8a2a2bfec1010VgnVCM1000000408120aRCRD&vgnextchannel=a0693487ce191010VgnVCM1000000408120aRCRD&vgnextfmt=default&section=4

They demand a 5-year contract, and I doubt I'll be living here for that long, so I'm going to put it off for now.

Yeah, they're equal to what I have now for download speed, and iirc they have higher upload speed.  Also having a static ip and no blocked ports would be nice.

Yeah, it's not a significant amount.

On a sidenote, I was also looking at commercial packages from my ISP, which would allow me to do static ip, email, proper DNS, and other stuff.  I don't want to commit to anything yet, but it looks promising.
Wow, my dream of having a romi@x86labs.org might come true.

That's a pretty lowsy dream...

Hey now... my dream is to get h@x0r.ca and that could actually come true :D

h@x0r.ca forwards to joetheodd@gmail.com. Quik, you're never going to get it, because I was the first one with enough balls to actually ask xar for it.

Xar hasn't owned the domain since December, and it was never his domain in the first place since he was never x0r.

It was Tmp's domain, but Xar probably had the power to create email accounts on it.

No, it's a little more complicated than that. However, point is that it's not registered anymore. I have been waiting for tmp to come on AIM to chat with him about it.

Let's put it this way, I've had Quik's dream come true for me.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

First try failed.. I didn't count for something on the firewall configuration.  I'm not sure what, but I'm confident I'll find it.

Hopefully I'll take another stab at this tomorrow.

Ok, the change-over has been made for the forum, and I'll copy over the site shortly.

Expect some minor disturbances over the next couple days/weeks, though -- everything is on a new system that I'm still getting used to, so I'm not 100% confident in it.

If your having problems with port blocking n stuff, try using no-ip.org. They will redirect ports for you, and its ip can be dynamicly updated. You can even use your domain names. Also, your forum looks funny with no pictures and css. =)

Smilies should be fixed.  I don't have time to fix other themes still, maybe another leader will do it *looks around*

Incidentally, does anybody notice a speed inprovement?  I notice that pages load significantly faster, but that's because I'm local and network speed doesn't affect me.

I mistyped the port, oopsy :)

The smilies and themes should all be fixed now.  Let me know if there's any other problems!
