Should Joe move out?
« on: July 11, 2006, 05:35:04 am »
Basically, I've been (kind of) offered a place to live at Tory's house. I'd be sleeping on his couch, of course, because it'd be just plain weird if I actually took my bed over there. We hang out all the time at his place and whenever a WoW patch comes out I find myself over there downloading it, and he doesn't care. He lives about two minutes from my house by car, too. Basically, he's got DSL and two sort of cool brothers, whereas I have dialup and a dumbass brother.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

I love it.

@Joe:  Actually move out, or just spend the night at someone elses house indefinately to increase the amount of time you have to play?

Get a job and pay them rent.  Housing/utilities/probably their food, too.  What else is there?

That's a fucking retarded decision, Joe. Why the HELL would you move out? For DSL? Get a job and buy your own DSL. Someone will be willing to provide you with something faster than 56K, even if it means internet via satellite.

You can do what my friend Zach does, and just basically live at my house until your parents ask you to go home, then come over the next day and repeat the cycle. :P

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

If you moved out, it would likely be the largest mistake you make in your young life.  The relationship you have with your parents isn't as fragile as others, but depsite that, it is not indestructable.  That said, it is also probably the single most importnt relationship you will ever have until you get married.  Don't push your luck.

@unTactical: Unofficially move out. I'll still live here, I just won't spend time here.

@deadly: Neither.

@newby: I live in the middle of nowhere. To get DSL it would be $300 per month to transfer our phone line ownership from one company to another and then another $20 per month to get their DSL service. Too much.1

$300 a MONTH to transfer your phone service?  Wow, thats the dumbest thing I've never heard of.  If anything it'd be a one time cancelation fee, and just wait til your contract is up for the phone line & then change it

Nah. Aparently one company owns the right to provide me with phone service and in order to transfer that right to another company for one month they want $300. I would sue them for having a monopoly if I weren't so lazy, because they'd definately lose.

In the technology field, my parents usually have no clue what's going on. I left World of Warcraft open, logged out, and my parents claimed it was causing my brother's computer to take ten minutes to load a single page in Internet Explorer. Anyone see flaws in that idea?

I do.

1. The program wasn't online, and then didn't use any bandwidth.
2. The people using that computer are in their fourties, plus a 13 year old son. Spyware and viruses galore.
3. They're using IE.

Is this seriously why you want to move out?

QQ, Joe.  QQ.

I suggest you take a step back and look at how fortunate your situation is relative to other people your age.  Your parents don't understand much about how computers work?  Big deal.  Educate them with a happy heart.

You're Christian, right?

Honor, not obey, IIRC. Also, the bible says to flee from temptation. Temptation to punch my brother in the face for being such a stupid person. My parents, I can't expect to know what's going on, but him..

But no, that's not why I want to move. It's nothing against my family, I just want DSL. =)

Great reasoning. You'll have DSL now for maybe a year or two. But if your life takes a turn for the worse you could end up living in a box on the street with a hooker name Sherley. DSL would probably be your last concern then.

Perhaps you need to worry less about now and more about your future, IIRC you had a bunch of Fs. Shouldn't fixing that be higher on your todo list then ditching your parents for DSL?

If he keeps that up, he'll be on 56K the rest of his life, because he won't be able to afford DSL. :)

Right, and also, abandoning your house for better internet is Greed, a deadly sin.  Let's not forget the Gluttony (free food from your friend?) and Wrath (punching your brother?).  Also, there's that Sloth you have.  Looks like you're pretty well fucked if you leave.

You'll settle for a Jesus school over an actual good college?

If you do move out and lived with your friend, eventually he'd get tired of you always on the computer, eating his food, and buming at his house, and you'll end up getting kicked out, and if you're lucky, your parent might want you back.
