Backers of illegal immigration at a rally near Los Angeles took down an American flag at a U.S. post office, stamped on it and replaced it with a Mexican flag as police looked on, according to witnesses and a video of the event.

God they're stupid.

My dad just mentioned to me (& made me realize) that the post office is a federal institution (I knew it, just didnt realize what this meant)....

Well, it is against the law, and they also assaulted the police officers.  I think the police officers would have been justified using a bit of force to keep things under control.

Stepping on the flag isn't illegal. It's frowned uppon. But, I belive it's in the same boat as burning the flag.  "Free speach."

It depends on the situation... I doubt many people would find spontaneously lighting a flag on fire honorable.

Unfortunately, that is correct. However, they didn't own the flag..so in essence it was vandalism of government property. (And theft if they kept it after replacing it.) Also, their riht to assemble ended when it wasn't peaceful anymore - the police should have been slapping some handcuffs.

You normally burn a flag only after it has touched the ground IIRC.

That's the kicker.  A high school student in the area here was charged with misdemeanor arson after students replaced the US flag with a Mexican flag over the ROTC building twice, after which the student burned the Mexican flag.

It was most definitely vandalism.
