New laptop
« on: October 19, 2006, 12:44:28 am »
If my laptop gets retained they'll(BestBuy) give me instore credit towards another computer.

What do I want that bestbuy has to offer?

I think I have like $1200? or less that will be credited to me...suggestions to what to go with/stay away from?

Would Gateway be bad?
Maybe this Toshiba
HP/AMD again?

I've had nothing but horrendously bad experience with Gateway.  Stay away from Gateway.  Gateway are evil.

Repeat after me:
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil
Gateway are evil

Now, what aren't you going to get?

I know three people who own gateways laptops. My brother has one that is at least two years old. It's beat up looking, but runs perfectly. A friend from school has a gateway that is older than my brothers and it also still works fine. Finally, my girlfriend bought one for school this year back in june or so. Aside from getting a great deal ($750 for an Athlon 64 somethingorother, some ATI mobility card, half gig of ram) and it also works fine.

While I cannot personally vouch for the company, your milage may vary.

NO SHIT.

Personal experiences are hardly applicable to the scale of the entire product line of a gigantic company.

Dude, you should get a Gateway CX2724.  That's the tablet I have.  It kicks major ass.  :)  It was $1250 plus tax - they'll give you the original purchase price + tax towards your new machine, but you're on your own for the new warranty.  Mine was $250 without accidental damage coverage.
I have a programming folder, and I have nothing of value there

My Mom's Gateway lappy isn't bad. Usually what I use for Guild Wars. It's been about... 18 months now, and only one problem (a wireless driver problem.)

your milage may vary.

I don't have a problem with Gateway desktops, but at work I deal with 2 different models of Gateway laptops and 2 models of dell laptops.  The gateway ones definately give me more trouble.

I hear toshiba's dont outlast their warranties but I have no personal experience with them.  If you get the extended warranty, HP would be my pick of the 3 based on nothing but brand (I didn't look at the specs).

That said, if it were me, I would never buy a laptop thats retail price before discounts was less than 1500 simply because laptops aren't something you should skimp on (much harder/expensive to repair/upgrade/troubleshoot/find drivers for).  Sony and IBM are my picks for quality.

ahh, ok, Iw as gonna ask you what you have.  I see that you've been through BestBuy's program before :(
Have you ended up scratching your screen by writing on it?...

I got it back today, again, sound works...sorta.  It crackles in & out so I told them to send it off & asked to talk with a manager.  They're going to request that it be replaced.

So far my list of problems include:
-Screen backlight going out
-Hinges breaking
-Power cord breaking
*Hinge cover not being replaced
*Casing being cracked
*Sound not working
*Sound not working properly

*indicates something BestBuy Service center f'd up.

So we're listing problems?  Okay.

Gateway laptop problems (just mine):
- Broken hinge
- Broken hinge again
- Screen latch broke
- Keyboard broke
- Overheated
- Keyboard broke again
- Overheated again, and melted the power cable
- Power cable doesn't stay connected (easily falls out)
- System crashed, twice
- Screen cracked
- Battery life is < 1 hour (on a new 9 cell, too)

And that thing isn't treated rough, and really doesn't do much traveling.

And we've just heard tales of Gateway laptops doing greatly (scroll up and read Hitmen's post).  Just because yours sucks doesn't mean all Gateways suck.  I'm not saying you should shut up about your problems, but perhaps you should consider being less critical.
