Since the 2nd was declared a day of mourning by Bush, and a _federal_ holiday - are public schools closed? I think they're controlled by the state but I don't know in this situation how this works. We're supposed to start school on Tuesday, but i don't know!!

I'm in the same situation as you. My dad's friend's children have received messages saying they get the day off... I did not.  I guess you should still go to school if you value your education.

Norfolk Public Schools will open as scheduled on Tuesday January 2, 2007.
Please observe the National Day of Mourning for President Ford in an appropriate manner.
Tuesday will be a normal instructional day for students and staff.

No, I just don't think it's right for them to tell us to "mourn appropriately" but still make us go to school. I definitely care, in fact I'm going up to Washington tomorrow to see the casket.
