I wasn't impressed by the picture quality of most of the HDTVs at Wal-mart.  The only ones that stood out were the Sonys and a few of the Vizios.

My friend is going to pick up a 50" TV and sell us his 44" for $400.  We don't have to go anywhere and we save a fuckton of money.  Win.

Heck yeah, I'm just not sure if I want a Plasma tv, though.

Generally speaking, plasmas are awesome! Unlike other flat/thinscreen technologies, they tend to be pretty bright, which makes them good for daytime use. Also, colors are (again, generally speaking - there are definitely exceptions) more vibrant than LCD.

The newer plasmas (like, everything since the price dropped to the sub-$3000 market) will "burn out" images, even if you do manage to burn in an image. This study said they burned in an image over 48 hours, and after 24 hours of playing a movie on loop the shadow was indistinguishable. http://www.panasonic.com/consumer_electronics/pressroom/cont2.asp?Filter=12&cont_id=822

It's still a good idea to change the channel often when the display is new, but realistically it's a non-issue these days.

[edit] also, use gray bars instead of black if you can :)

The plasma I'm thinking about buying has "anti-burn technology." But yeah, thanks for the heads up  :).

Our plasma is pretty new, and has "anti-burn technology" but still gets burn ins. They do burn out, but it's annoying. I like my LCD a lot more.

It is really that bad? Like is it pretty visible when you're watching something else? Is there like faded colors or like you can actually see the outlines of what was on the screen?
