It's just two joins. I was shocked to see how long the query you ran earlier took. Are you indexing the appropriate fields?

[edit] After looking back at the query, I realized you're doing a pattern match on the topic title. That ought to explain why it took so long; how long does it take if you use the PK?

I try, but I have no control over where she sits (remember, she's always late).  She sits close enough that I can say short things, but we can't have a full conversation or anything.  There's usually 1 or 2 people between us, assuming she's even on the same side of the room.

Yeah, I threw it together the lazy way. But it's still joining two rather large tables together.

Sigh.  This year is going to suck.  My ex-roommates graduated this past spring, and it's gonna be lonely.  I hafta study for the GRE, start on grad school apps, and focus on my classes.

So what? A search on an indexed field is a O(log(n)) operation. The query is slow because you asked the database to do an expensive operation (pattern match) on every single post in the entire database before you even got to the join. When you consider that n=153442, replacing the O(n) pattern match with O(log(n)) PK search will reduce runtime complexity of the initial (pre-join) search by 4.5 orders of magnitude, not to mention that the pattern match is replaced with a numerical equals check.

Since the join isn't actually affected, it's tough to say exactly how the final run-time will fare, but I think we can pretty safely assume that 153442 pattern matches accounts for a great deal of the one second the query took. This page was constructed using 12 queries in 168ms, and I'm sure that almost every one of them performed a join on the users table, so it would be absurd to suggest that a join on the users table takes more than 14ms.

I'm going away Wednesday night, and I won't be around until Monday.  I don't want to go and say "you wanna go out?  But not this week.  I have plans that don't involve you."  That's kind of a dick move on its own.
