I had my first real job interview today. Wow... it was incredibly strange. I had to answer four questions. One was on learning a new skill and challenges associated. Another was on accomplishing a goal. The last two were on group work (one on conflict and how you resolved it and the other on communicating with a new group of people). It was so fucked up. I haven't done that much in my life, and I had a tough time coming up with good examples. I did fine here (I think).

Then, I had to pick one of four topics and just start talking about it. I fucked up here hardcore. Oh well, if I don't get the internship, Shell wasn't for me, and I'll just crawl back into my hole and do research next summer.... again.  :-\
errr... something like that...

It sounds like that was just an HR interview, then?  I've had a fair number of interviews and they all start out with some sort of "preliminary interview" which usually involves little beyond HR questions.  I'm sure it's important to show that you have good work ethic, work well with others, etc, (ie, tell them what they want to hear), but all of the other interviews I've had have a "followup" interview where they just drill you with technical questions.  Most of those last 2+ hours where you're sitting down with some combination of managers and engineers asking you questions.

I'm not sure exactly how it works, but if you feel like you impressed the person you interviewed even slightly, I bet you'll get called back for another interview.  Don't sweat it if this doesn't happen.  It was your first interview and it's hard to know what to expect.  Hope you get the job, man!

Before interviews, you should review the most common "tell me about a time when you..." questions, and come up with good answers. When you answer them, ALWAYS follow the STAR approach (Situatino, Task, Action, Result). The most important part is result -- you can tell a great story, but if you don't tell them how it ended up saving the company money, or how ie ended up saving your relationship with your boss, or whatever, it's far less compelling.

Also, there's nothing technically wrong with making up answers to those questions, technically. It's probably immoral, but eh?

What do you mean by "nothing technically wrong"?

I'm not disagreeing, I'm just not sure what you're saying.

I mean, if you make up a good story (or embellish a real one), you'll almost certainly gain an advantage over saying, "uhh, that never happened to me".

(I'm not saying it's morally justifiable, it's part of the problem (in my mind) with competition in general, the idea that good guys finish last :) )

No, this is the interview that determines if I get the job or not. It was an actual engineer giving me the interview, and he didn't want any technical information at all. This is because it was just for an internship. If it was a full time job, I'd have to go for a day or a week at a bootcamp thing and work with others on a project.

Yeah, that's how I ended up answering the questions, but it's hard to say how it'll end up. I guess the only thing I can do now is wait. I should know next week.

That's lame.  The interviews I've had are all for internships too and they all ask very technical questions.  There have been a few where the majority of the content of the discussion is me talking about projects I've worked on (ones I put on my resume), but they still ask "are you familiar with xyz?".  Seems kinda lame that they wouldn't ask you technical questions!

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

Call her. What's the worst than can happen? It's not like you're proposing to her.
One must ask oneself: "do I will trolling to become a universal law?" And then when one realizes "yes, I do will it to be such," one feels completely justified.
