Well, whether or not they prohibit alcohol, I don't care; but they have to do SOMETHING to fix the problem with natives.
For those of you who haven't grown up around this problem, here's what's going on where I live (and, to a lesser extent, in the rest of Canada):
The Native people are catered to. They're given all the money they need to survive, so they never have to work. They're encouraged to not work, because if they get a job they end up with less income. So they stay home and do nothing, because, why wouldn't they? They have nothing to strive for, no goals, we've robbed them of that, and as long as we keep giving them free money, why bother?
My stepdad trains natives as a living to drive trucks. Basically, they're given a $10,000+ course on how to drive trucks, for free, and they're guarenteed a permanent job. Most of them end up showing up to class drunk and get kicked out. Most others graduate, then go back home, and don't take the job. Out of 100+ drivers he's trained, only
1 has actually taken the job. That's $10,000+ * 99+ of taxpayers money wasted on people who aren't interested in learning anyway. Why would they take a job for less when they can get by without doing anything?
I realize that I'm generalizing. There are rare cases where some individual or tribe will get smart and invest their money. I know of at least one tribe in Northern Manitoba who invested their money, and they're doing extremely well. They have a better school than the white kids (who aren't allowed to go to their school), and overall they're in better shape than a lot of people.
But the problem is, you can't blame the vast majority of natives for being the way they are. They're basically spoiled children. They've been given all the money they need their entire lives without working, and they end up as drunks.
Oh, and one other thing: they're given
more if they have more children. So therefore, the population of natives (here) is exploding with every generation, and the problems are only escalating.
What I want is for a government official to recognize the problem and to take steps to solve it, besides giving them more money. Giving them free money
is not the answer.
And that's my political statement.
