Past, present, or future?
« on: August 22, 2006, 12:35:14 pm »
Originally, I made this a poll.  But that's too inflexable.  I want to hear opinions and preferences.

In the other thread, I was thinking about what type of a world to use.  I have some ideas of what I want to do for the campaign, but they can be applied to any many styles of worlds.  The PC's will be all humans.  Besides that, I have some options:

RULES
- Depending on other factors, it'll be Shadowrun rules or T&T++ rules.  Probably T&T++.

WORLD
- The world will be my own, not Earth or from any game. It'll be based on the other factors.

TIME (TECHNOLOGY)
- Fantasy
- Past (18th-19th century)
- Present
- Future

MAGIC
- Yes?
- No?

MONSTERS
- Normal monsters (fantasy-style)
- Lovecraft monsters (sprinkled around, if I feel like it)

MUTATIONS
- Should PCs be able to have mutations, like gamma world?

I can tell you this: when you start, your characters are going to know very little about the world.  This thread is for discussion, I'm going to choose whatever I feel like, based on what your preferences are.

Past, present, or future?

Sorry rabbit, had to delete your post.  Here it is, though:

I don't know the Gamma World rules!  Basically, I'd like to see a Final Fantasy XII-ish world, where there's a lot of badass technology, but still a lot of magic and monsters and the such.

Sorry!

And incidentally, gamma-world is a post-apocalyptic world where player characters have various mutations, good and bad, sort of like super powers.  I only played once, but it was sort of neat, I might steal some ideas, maybe.

Fantasy.
Magic but nothing too amazing.
Lovecraft monsters.
I don't know much about mutations so no.

And like a fool I believed myself, and thought I was somebody else...

I like fantasy.  I still want to see the semi-futuristic FFXII kind of world.  And I agree with Blaze, magic is fine, as long as it's not too over-the-top or extreme.  Lovecraft did Cthulu, etc..., right?  I don't know much about him.  And IMHO mutations sound stupid, though I'd probably enjoy them more if I knew all about GW.

Lovecraft did do Cthulhu, yep.  But I wouldn't use his Elder Gods (ie, Azathoth) or his Great Old Ones (ie, Cthulhu), but you might run across the cults or something.  It wouldn't be a key story focus, but maybe a side-story.  In fact, the less you know about Lovecraft's books, the better -- you can learn about it while playing.

And I've never played FFXII, but I know the older final fantasies.  I don't think I'd like to run a fantasy-tech game, but that's just me.

Mutations are fun in the context, but I won't bother with it.

Past.
Yes, but not over-the-top magic.  Magic should be used to make things easier, not to do the impossible.  That's no fun for those of us who hate spellcasting/spellcaster characters.
Normal-ish monsters.
No mutations.

Present would be interesting. Let's all be Hezbolah and try to assasinate Yoni (boss encounter).

As for magic, I'd say yes to some degree. Magi and warlock type spells, such as life draining and fireballs, as well as priest (healing magic). Casters shouldn't be able to dramatically outdamage non-casters, though.

I don't know much Lovecraft lore, so I roll a pass on this lewt.

As for the mutations, whatever. I don't care, really.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

If we have mutations, I demand Joe's character's head explodes if he doesn't keep a belt tied around it.

Like I said, it's not the real world.  I'm just looking for a technology/society level.

RULES

WORLD

TIME (TECHNOLOGY)

MAGIC

MONSTERS

MUTATIONS
- Should PCs be able to have mutations, like gamma world?

TIME: Past or Fantasy (by past I mean D&D like stuff. Which is pretty fantasy like)
MAGIC: Yes. I don't expect anything too amazing, but it would be nice if spellcasters had a slight leg up on melee. I mean, come on, if a melee gets in contact with a spellcaster he's gonna lose, but it shouldn't be that the spellcasters are fucking garbage and can't beat a melee 1v1 at all. Just make it fair. Or useful.

MONSTERS: Normal monsters. I don't particularly care for Lovecraft monsters... unless you can mix them in well.
MUTATIONS: I don't understand. :/

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

I'd like a really challenging monster somewhere, like a side-boss or something.  A hard monster, but a really fun one :P

Well, I'm not really into strong combat.  Combat encounters will be minimal.  And I don't do things like bosses and such.

And I'm really thinking that I want to do present-style technology.  Perhaps.  We'll see!
