Apparently, these dogs know. From cdfreaks.com (http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/13387):
Quote
The entertaiment industry has a new weapon against movie pirates. Two English dogs
called Lucky and Flo have become the first dogs that are used to find counterfeit DVD's.
The dogs have been taught to identify DVDs that might be located in boxes, envelopes
or other packaging, as well as discs concealed amongst other goods. Their first test was pretty succesful.
For their first major live test, Lucky and Flo were put to work at FedEx's UK hub
at Stansted Airport in Essex where they immediately identified packages and parcels containing DVDs for destinations in the UK.
Fact director general Raymond Leinster said: "This is the first time dogs have been used
anywhere in the world to search for counterfeit DVDs and the results were amazing.
With the co-operation and assistance of FedEx and Customs we were able to properly
test the dogs in a live situation and prove that they can work in a busy working environment."
Till now we've already seen dogs that can find explosive and drugs, does this mean that the authorities
see counterfeit DVDs as the same threat? The costs of training such a dog and the fact that they are now
not available for finding drugs and explosive makes one wonder...
I guess taking dogs away from finding bombs and drugs to help stop piracy is important; after all, we all know that piracy funds terrorism (http://www.x86labs.org:81/forum/index.php/topic,5692.0.html).
This is so lame.
Maybe real DVDs have a smelliness on them?
...but what about home movies then, hmm, GHEY
You know what I bet it is?
Magic markers and sharpies.
I almost always label my burned media that way. Betcha that's how it happened.
I wond if the dogs can tell the difference between DVDs though. Since movie vs. pirate quality is different (I'd assume) they might be able to smell out specific ones, that'd be cool

Evidently only the ones who get caught pirating movies. :P
Note: yes, I know, that was a joke. I realize it was circular logic. Thank you.

What does copyright breach smell like?
It smells like Sidoh after he gets done climbing the stairs; he works up quite a sweat climbing a mere 10 steps. That's why his house has escalators in it.

You forget about the migit that pushes me around in a wheelchair.
Smells like tuna
hahahahaha. I didn't even read the original topic. hahaahha.
What a bunch of dumbshits. Their ability to prioritize ranks a 4/10 on Sidoh's scale.

They're probably taught to smell it in large amounts or something. Your average person isn't going to be shipping more than 2 or 3 at a time.
So they can smell how many DVDs there are? Those dogs are impressive!
Their noses can read DVDs x_x
or they just sniff out any cd, and check them....

I'm almost certain they were both joking...
What, exactly, does a CD smell like? I've never noticed a distinctive odor when I take it out of the package..

I assume that you've heard a dog's sense of smell is multitudes more sensitive than ours?

While that's true, I don't think CDs have a smell. They're basically plastic.

Since they said the test was pretty successful, I think it's obvious that they do have a distinguishable smell. :P

Um. The smell would be stronger if there was a large magnitude.

They could be bluffing to scare people into stopping the mailing of bootleg DVDs.

That's true, but I wouldn't be all too surprised if CD's had a smell detectable by dogs.

But when you burn an ISO file, it's not an ISO anymore. ;)
