General Discussion / So, this is awesome
« on: June 16, 2009, 04:12:18 pm »
Apparently, someone hit my company's servers to help spread this virus:

http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/305676/thousands_web_sites_stung_by_mass_hacking_attack?fp=4&fpid=16

One of our employees got compromised, her username and passwords for several internal and a couple external (client-owned) servers were stolen, and a number of FTP servers that she uses were broken into as well.

Ironically, she's a Mac user. :)

General Discussion / Anyone ever have pink eye for < 24 hours?
« on: June 11, 2009, 05:30:21 pm »
I'm not sure that it was exactly less than 24 hours, but pretty close....

Yesterday driving to work my right eye bugged me most of the day; I occasionally saw this funny blur out of it.  Finally after going crazy itching it a lot yesterday before I left the office, I checked and my eye was all red, and I had some dried goop (I assumed mucus) on my lower eyelash.  I wiped it off and went home.  It came back a bit later, and had spread to my left eye; by the time I went to bed, both eyes were flushing.  I woke up a couple times in the night and when I checked they were both very pink.  When I got up this morning the first thing I did was call the doctor's office for a prescription for a med, but then I took a shower and used a washcloth to get the crap off of my eyelids.

By 10:00 am this morning I was fine, my eyes seem to have cleared up.

Anyone ever have something like that?  I'm sick this week - I figured it might have been bacterial conjunctivitis (I'm on antibiotics, azithromycin 250mg, for strep).  But I've never heard of it hitting and receding so quickly.

What should I do?

General Discussion / Happy Christmas from down under!

And for those of you in Canada, maybe you can explain Boxing Day to me?  It was a bit of contention with my friends in Canberra, but that's ALL the commercials have been talking about.  Boxing Day this, Boxing Day that, blah blah blah blah blah, sheesh.

Actually for most of you, you're going to be catching up to today fairly soon, but I'm in Canberra, Australia right now at GMT +10.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I'll be (mostly) afk for the next couple weeks.  Cheers, mate!

So I was watching House on Hulu and saw some ads for this.

I saw that it's based on a book by F. Scott Fitzgerald, who wrote one of my favorites, The Great Gatsby

Anyone read it?

General Discussion / Network infrastructure setup help
« on: December 01, 2008, 04:58:00 am »
I just bought a house (closing in < 2 weeks!) and want to set up a better network than I have right now.  Having never wired a house or anything substantial for internet, I'd like some validation on what I'm planning.

I've done some math and figured out that there would be 7 ports throughout the house that I'd want to set up:
* 1 in each of 3 bedrooms
* 1 in an outside "bonus" room
* 1 in a living area
* 2 in a common area - 1 for the Xbox and 1 for general use (like a desk)

I currently have a 4-port Linksys wireless N router, but I don't believe I want to use this as a primary router for a couple reasons:
* I want to install the networking hub in my utility room inside of cabinets.  This would put the wireless signal coming from a non-central part of the house, AND it would be close to electronics that could disrupt it, specifically, the washer/dryer.
* It only has 4 ports; to get this setup I'd need at least 7.

I still want people plugging into wired networking to get a dynamic IP address unless otherwise configured, so here's the final setup I've come up with:

Cable company -> Cable modem -> Wired router -> 8-port switch

The switch has cabling to each room connected to it and is the central point.  However, with an 8-port switch I'm not able to connect any additional devices (7 rooms plus connection to the router).  The connection to the Xbox will then go through my wireless-N router which will be configured as a gateway (so DHCP functions are disabled).  All DHCP assignment should be handled through the main wired router.

Ultimately, connections might look like this:

* Cable company -> Modem -> Wired router -> Switch -> PC
* Cable company -> Modem -> Wired router -> Switch -> Wireless Router -> Wireless Network -> PC
* Cable company -> Modem -> Wired router -> Switch -> Wireless Router -> Wired port -> Xbox

Is this correct?

Oooh la la!

I ended up going with the planets theme, though I did consider using the Mountains theme at first.  I was disappointed that the Planets theme didn't ask which planet I was from. :-/
