General Discussion / Colorado's Supermax Prison
October 18, 2013, 08:11:36 PM
I'm watching The Interrupters and they were talking about Ameena Matthews who is daughter of Jeff Fort, who is apparently some epic Chicago gangster (Nixon invited him to his inauguration, apparently.....thats epic)---rivaling Al Capone for noteworthiness in re being a gang leader.

Anyway, Fort is apparently in ADX w/"no human contact" (NHC) orders. While googling all this, I found that UDenver's law school has a clinic that is fighting this intense solitary conditions as "cruel and unusual."

My thoughts: Why? The people w/NHC orders are proven time and time again to be some of the most dangerous people alive. We apparently can't kill these people (for whatever reason), so locking them up and almost literally throwing away the key is all that can be done to protect society. Even prisoners and correction officers deserve protection.

Discuss why NHC is bad/good. If bad, what do we replace it with? Obviously, we have to have an alternative before simply putting these people back in gen pop.

General Discussion / Windows 8.1
October 17, 2013, 08:31:56 PM
Now that my crappy dell xps 10 is discontinued, I've been hoping for the release of Win RT 8.1. But no release for me today.

IE crashes on that thing so much. At home, I mostly just remote into my desktop (which I'm doing right now). Keyboard is more responsive when remoted in, mouse works, IE doesnt crash (cause I dont use IE). oh man. Come on 8.1 RT release!

General Discussion / women and govt shutdown
October 16, 2013, 10:11:35 PM
there have been a lot of posts from my facebook friends about how we should let women run things, because they wouldn't crash the US govt.

I stumbled on this article on reddit today: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2010/08/90-years-later-women-vote-more-often-than-men/

sooo....women do run things?

General Discussion / unofficial survey re lawyer fees
October 11, 2013, 11:40:07 PM
I've been thinking about billing structures. In lawyer-land, billable hours are historically king. Modern day, though, alternative fee agreements are becoming more popular (but aren't common).

I have a few situations that I'd like to get input on, and see what sounds more preferable for peeps.

Scenario: You have what you think is a simple divorce.

Fee arrangement #1: I bill $300/hour for approx. 20 hours.

Fee arrangement #2: I bill $200/hours for approx. 30 hours.

Fee arrangement #3: I bill a flat cost of $6k for the basic divorce, but if it becomes complicated/you ask me about stuff unrelated to the basic divorce, I start charging $200-300 per hour.

What sounds most attractive?

(note that regardless of the option you pick, I charge $6k for a basic divorce)
(also note that you don't probably think about this rationally---you think about that as a person in the midst of the shittiest time of your life)

General Discussion / who knows shit about cars?
October 01, 2013, 11:06:55 PM
new bearing/hub assembly in. that's fine and drives nice. my question: what do I need to do re: that damn broken line that's attached to the CV axle assembly? dad and Haynes manual tell me that broken line is vent port line for 4wd. time to figure out what to do with that.

also, any tips for getting new brake pads into calibers? the damn new clips wont seat completely and the pads, therefore, won't go it. hell, I could get pads into old clips (but it was dark as hell, so I gave up and put old pads back on). it isn't a match of compressing the pistons back into calipers (I gots me a big ass C clamp with which I do that); it's a matter of getting the male end of the pads into the female/notches of the caliper.

uuhhh..............cant attach photos. hmm. guess I can upload later.

General Discussion / Breaking Bad: Felina
September 29, 2013, 11:20:17 PM
So epic.

Best show I've watched in a long-ass time. Its commentary on politics, society, and culture was subtle, yet moving. Its cinematography was brilliant (I'm a New Mexican, so I'm biased). It was a thrilling, intriguing, and demanding show. And it had an actual start and an actual end. +1 for the people that decided to actually end the show instead of do some weird crap *cough*Bob Newhart & Lost*cough*. At least the Newhart ending was original, I spose.

General Discussion / Bradley Manning

Not talkin about the traitor stuff...talkin about the sex stuff.

So he wants to be a woman. (become a woman? is a woman? I dunno how to properly say it, so fuck it). Anyhow, he is in military prison and want hormone therapy.

Discussion:
One hand: For good mental health, it's probably legit to give this guy therapy (talking + drugs).
Other hand: Why should the govt ever pay for nonmedically necessary surgeries (I'm talkin _necessary_ like bypass, cancer treatment, etc).
Third hand: As an offshoot discussion, what about lifers/deathrow people? Why pay for anything?

I recognize why (cause city on a hill, Christian, right, morals, etc), but it kinda seems like a waste with regard to lifers/deathrow. Why spend money, time, effort on someone that has no ability to contribute to society (and in fact has already harmed society to such a degree we said "fuck you, guy" and sent him away)? Would those resources not be better spent helping poor kids?

hmm.....morals and shit

I guess I should maybe figure out what I do have in my desktop before I really start looking. lol?

General Discussion / potential freelance job
March 14, 2013, 01:07:41 AM
k...I work for the county and we've start a new program that monitors a certain type of legal case (guardianships). he have no case management software. prebuilt stuff doesn't meet our exact needs and IT sucks. therefore, we're thinking about building our own system ( we have to be able to disseminate it to other counties for the regional program Texas is starting).

Yall: Anyone willing to create (paid) a db/management system that can be spread to other counties and yet have a central place access it? I'm not yet sure how much we can spend, so I'd like quotes on creating a system. If interested, call me at 575-640-7937 or 806-775-1720.

I figure yall are capable as shit, so why not ask. Off hand, I think we can only offer $3-5k for a system that will help use manage the 1400 cases we're currently trying to monitor based on paper and memory.

last semester of law school, so I'm taking a couple of blow-off classes, and law practice technology is one of them.

today we're learning that (1) anything free is bad and (2) other crap that people should because they have a computer (e.g., don't run more than one AV.

...sigh

fuckin A.

I have huge issues getting motivated to hit the gym/be active. Seems like being unhealthy spirals into staying unhealthy...just gotta have intense will power.

I bet this guy's mood swings were intense.

whoa. I figured it meant shit (just like a VIN does on a car). but seeing it all spelled out. I guess it's less complicated than a car's though? I dunno...thought it was cool so I posted.

General Discussion / Stereotypes
April 21, 2012, 11:28:21 PM
Absurd imagination, hard reality, or somewhere in between?

I say somewhere in between, closer to reality. White southerners drink and shoot things. Black men don't raise their kids. Asians are smart, little old ladies can't drive safely/drive while looking through the steering wheel. So on and so forth.

While that doesn't apply to all white southerners, all black men, and all Asians, it applies to lots of them. Enough of them that a generalization exists.

What say you?

General Discussion / I accidentally ordered 2 suits
March 07, 2012, 05:16:57 PM
$650 suit from Joseph A Bank.  It's a trio, so it has the suit slacks + a second matching pair.  It was on sale, so I figured I'd get one, but I guess I clicked twice or something.

Question:  Return for what I paid, or try to sell for retail price on eBay?  Or does anyone here want a 42R suit for what I paid + shipping? (not likely, but I want suggestions re: the ebay v. return thing)

/side note:  I finally have 5 suits.  Last summer, I had to wear slacks + coat every day, but I only had 3 suits, so I alternated + wore a sports jacket with slacks.  This summer, I can dress appropriately for my law-work.

General Discussion / Another dog fight
March 02, 2012, 08:14:29 PM
Last week, Cory and Brown Dog (the foster) got into a fight, and Cory has a big gash on his snout that required stitches and he also had part of his lower eyelid torn off.

Tonight, as I was sitting watching NCIS on DVR, I hear'd the dogs a-barking again.  I could tell this was a fightin bark, so I ran to the back door to break it up.  Through the back window, I saw Shosty and Riley barking and nipping and jumping on Brown Dog (Shosty and Riley don't know how to fight, so I'm sure they just thought they were playing).  By the time I go out the back door, Cory and Brown Dog were up on their hind legs bitin at each other.  Cory has a couple cuts on is ear and Brown Dog has a cut on his snout and on his gum --- the cuts on both dogs are superficial.

In the house, Cory will walk by Brown Dog and stop and stare him down til Brown Dog starts to growl.  I'm 98% sure that Cory starts these fights.  He also gets into fights with Dani's sister's male dog.  Shosty had no problem with Brody (sister's dog) nor does he have any problem with Brown Dog.  Brown Dog is a giant scaredy cat.  Nonetheless, Dani is all pissed with Brown Dog because of the fights.  What's worse is that she contacted the Humane Society, who we're fostering through, and said that Brown Dog needs to go because he doesn't get along well with Cory.  HS said they have no where for him to go :(.

I feel sad for Brown Dog because he gets picked on by Cory and there is no where else for him to go.  We also figure it'll be difficult for him to get adopted out because he is so afraid of things.  He has a nervous bladder, so when he gets in trouble, he pees (even when for peeing on things --- lol).  Poor Brown Dog.

/back story:  Dani = gf; Shosty = my 5 year old male black lab; Riley = my 3 year old female black lab; Cory = Dani's 9 year old Catahoula; Brody = a fat-arsed male black lab
