Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Many of you probably know Doyle as the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories.  I've never read any Holmes, but I'd like to one day. 

The book I'm reading now is called, "The Best Horror Stories of Arthur Conan Doyle". 

This is my first experience with Doyle, although I have done a respectable amount of reading of early 20th century horror. 

Judging by the first few stories in this book, he's quite good at it.  I don't think he sets the scene or atmosphere as well as other horror authors that I've read, although sometimes I prefer authors getting to the point quickly.   

He frequently writes shorter short-stories which depend on surprising or shocking endings.  Those make the stories quick and entertaining to read, but at the same time it excuses the author from setting up a real atmosphere of horror. 

Overall, I recommend his horror.  They're fun to read and quite clever, at times.
