From my experience with painting, you don't have to be shiny for definition, you just have to make sure that the low areas are darker and the light areas are lighter. A thin dark-brown paint and a white drybrush should take care of everything!

Is there some reason that bodybuilders are always shiny? Do they just like to be greased?

yeah they always use oils and junk to show their definition and they also use rub on tan to make themselves look bronze and junk. in real life he doesn't actually look that gross. he surprisingly looks normal

the oils are used to reflect the light so the contestants can show every curve and bump. and it gives a statue type feel
