Maybe this is crazy, but wouldn't it make more sense to play Super Mario Allstars with zsnes? I find that zsnes is a better emulator than any NES one I've tried.

I might start going to a small group (doesn't exist yet) with my 281 (systems architecture) teacher which will consist almost entirely of writing up CPU implementations in VHDL and sticking them on FPGAs to do things (his demonstration today included PacMan and Space Invaders (non emulated!)).  Should be fun.
