Step 1: Have a regular, adequate sleep schedule
Step 2: drink enough water
Step 3: don't each too much sugar/have a balanced diet
Step 4: boost your metabolism with daily exercise
Step 5: Defeat insomnia by avoiding ocular stimulation right before bedtime
Step 6: Tired? Take a nap!

I've personally tried this method and while it seems like there are a lot of steps, there are NO CRASHES and NO SIDE EFFECTS!!!  Also, it is 100% FREE

I really think we should try to market this guys, we could put 5 Hour Energy and Random Energy Pill X out of business!

Hmm... I seem to do everything right... except get no sleep. And I can't fix that :P Oh, and "ocular stimulation" before bed.

Chavo

Sorry, this is an all-or-nothing method.  If you fail to do any of the steps you will never have any energy ever.

Awesome! That's exactly what I do, and let me just say this: IT WORKS!

<edit> Be careful, though -- having kids can apparently ruin this technique.

Well the reason I've been doing the caffeine pills is for the crash, because the medicine I'm on for my Crohns disease makes me an insomniac :(

What's wrong with being an insomniac? You have so much more time. Get a second job.

True, but I do all of these and still get tired. I usually skip the afternoon nap though, but sometimes I get it in. Not for longer than 45 minutes though, as recommended. I've also read you can replace your nighttime sleep with a series of 20 minute naps but I don't care to do that.

But, question for you. How do you combat being tired after doing step 4? I guess taking a nap, but that's not feasible after I work out. For the first 30-45 minutes afterwards, I feel great. Then I don't feel like doing anything.

Meditate, or lay down and read.

If you are exhausted after a reasonable workout, you probably need to do a better job on step 3 (find out what nutrients you are missing).

truste1

I'm pretty sure it's normal to be tired after strenuous activity.

Physically tired, yes.  Feeling like falling asleep an hour after working out when you've just had a good night's sleep, no.  Hydration or vitamin deficiency are the most common culprits in that case.  Keep in mind that I'm talking about morning exercise to boost your metabolism (and in turn, giving you an energy jump-start).  Exercise designed to physically wear you out can also be used to help make it easier to go to sleep, but not in the same way (ie, you'll typically want to finish exercising ~2-3 hours before going to bed and use a warm shower/sauna/hot tub/etc to help relax your body afterward).

I was about to say something like that at first, until I realized that's not much different from Lead's solution to tiredness.
